BOLTON WANDERERS REPORTS 1999-2000

Huddersfield 0 Bolton 3

Bo Hansen's two-goal blast kept Bolton's Division One promotion flame flickering.

The Dane opened his account in the ninth minute with a diving header and added to his tally with a low drive just before the half-hour.

Those strikes, together with Mike Whitlow's close-range header, left the Wanderers hovering just outside the play-off picture with only a handful of games left to go.

The result came as a shock to the system for Huddersfield, who were looking to stretch their unbeaten run to nine games.

But Town are still odds-on to finish above their Lancashire promotion rivals by the end of the campaign.

An Allan Johnston snapshot fell into Nico Vaesen's arms in the eighth minute, but Hansen went one better moments later.

His diving header at the far post from a deep Johnston cross from the left gave the Terriers' Belgian goalkeeper no chance.

Earlier, Clyde Wijnhard had an effort ruled out for offside.

Huddersfield piled on the pressure in search of an equaliser, with Chris Hay blazing over from 15 yards after good work by Chris Holland and Chris Beech.

Then Hay won possession running back into an onside position, and his first-time ball to Wijnhard fell into the path of Holland who sliced wide as he ran in from the left.

Hansen scored his second on 26 minutes. Eidur Gudjohnsen ghosted past Craig Armstrong on the right, after Steve Jenkins lost possession to the Scandinavian.

The midfielder then cut back for Hansen to drill a low shot past the outstretched hands of Vaesen.

The Dane was denied a hat-trick on 36 minutes when Vaesen forced the striker wide from a Gudjohnsen cross.

After the break the hosts poured forward in further numbers to get back into the game.

Beech unleashed a crisp drive, and a Martin Smith header was cleared by full-back Bergsson.

Then a second Smith header dropped wide of Jussi Jaaskelainen's right-hand post from a Jamie Vincent centre.

But in between Bolton had put the game beyond Huddersfield's reach when Claus Jensen got to the byline to find Whitlow unmarked in the area, from where he headed past the stranded figure of Vaesen.
