Wolves hung on for victory in a thriller at Prenton Park after being handed
two gift goals in the first 12 minutes.
The Merseysiders, after pulling a goal back in the 20th minute, laid siege to
the Wolves goal for long periods but simply could not find an equaliser.
Wolves' win lifted them up two places to 10th, just three points off a
play-off place, while Tranmere lie 16th.
The visitors were ahead after just 44 seconds, thanks to an awful goalkick
from Tranmere keeper Danny Coyne.
The ball went straight to the feet of Robbie Keane who kept his cool and
curled a right foot shot wide of the advancing Coyne.
It was embarrassing for Coyne and he was again unlucky in the 12th minute when
apparently unsighted as Fernando Gomez blazed home a second for the visitors.
Tranmere skipper Kenny Irons was at fault this time. He was under no pressure
to clear a cross by Mark Atkins but headed straight to Gomez, whose volley went
through George Santos' legs and beyond Coyne's despairing dive.
John Aldridge's men, far from being dispirited, turned on the style with some
superb play by midfield dynamo Alan Mahon and Santos.
Santos put them back in the picture with a glancing near-post header from
Mahon's 20th-minute corner.
It was nearly all Tranmere after this but Wolves held on defiantly with fine
work in central defence by Neil Emblen and Keith Curle.
Steve Sedgley replaced Steve Corica for Wolves before half time to add some
weight in front of the back four and soon after half time Robert Niestroj gave
way to Dave Connolly.
Wolves keeper Mike Stowell made a superb one handed save from Mahon in the
56th minute.
A few minutes earlier a Mahon cross appeared to be deflected on to a post and
was scrambled away in a goalmouth melee.
Tranmere used all three substitutes in a desperate bid to grab a point but
Scott Taylor headed wide and a Dave Challinor header was punched away by
Stowell.
Keane almost grabbed a third for the visitors on the break but Coyne saved
well.
