Wolves' hopes of booking a play-off place suffered a dent as they were held to
a goalless draw at the County Ground.
Welsh international defender Adrian Williams came closest to scoring for Mark
McGhee's side when he thundered a header against the crossbar on the stroke of
half-time.
Swindon keeper Fraser Digby had kept his side in the game five minutes earlier
with a brilliant double save to deny Finnish striker Mixu Paatelainen but
Swindon could have clinched victory themselves after the break as they pressed
forward.
Substitute Philippe Cuervo twice went close and fellow substitute Chris Hay
forced a full length save from keeper Hans Segers in the 72nd minute.
FA Cup semi-finalists Wolves entered the game needing a victory to help them
keep pace in the race for the promotion play-offs and they nearly opened the
scoring on 14 minutes.
Striker Don Goodman played a neat one-two with Dougie Freedman to race through
on goal but veteran defender Brian Borrows made a last ditch tackle to force the
ball wide for a corner.
Full-back Kevin Muscat volleyed a poor clearance narrowly wide of Swindon's
goal five minutes later as the visitors continued to press for the opening
goal.
But new Swindon signing Iffy Onuora thought he had won a penalty on his home
debut in the 21st minute.
Onuora appeared to be shoved in the back by Williams as he attempted to meet
David Kerslake's cross from the right but the referee failed to see the incident
and waved play on.
Digby had to be at his best on 39 minutes to deny Paatelainen before Williams
crashed his header against the bar in the closing stages of the first half.
But the introduction for Swindon of Hay and Cuervo sparked the home side into
life and they looked by far the more dangerous team after the break.
Cuervo sent a free header narrowly over the crossbar from Mark Walters corner
in the 50th minute and Cuervo was again the visitors' tormentor when he forced
Segers to save at the second attempt three minutes later.
Wolves manager Mark McGhee sent on club record scorer Steve Bull on 61 minutes
and the striker thought he had won a penalty a minute later after seemingly
being held back by defender Alan McDonald but the referee refused to blow for
the spot kick much to the disgust of the 2,000 travelling fans.
Swindon took advantage of their luck to nearly open the scoring on 72 minutes
when Hay forced a great save from Segers away to his right as Swindon looked for
the winner but Bull could have stolen the points in the dying seconds but his
left footed shot was saved by Digby at the second attempt.
