WOLVES REPORTS 1997-1998

Huddersfield 1 Wolves 0

By Steven Baker, PA Sport

Jon Dyson scored an injury-time winner today as Huddersfield moved further away from the relegation zone while denting Wolves' promotion hopes at the McAlpine Stadium.

The centre-half rose highest in a crowded six-yard box to head Alex Smith's corner into the roof of the net after Mike Stowell had failed to gather the cross.

Defeat was harsh on Wolves, as Town had rarely looked capable of breaching the visitors' defence, but Mark McGhee's side themselves did little to suggest they deserved all three points.

Wolves came close to taking the lead as early as the fourth minute, with Mark Atkins' header cannoning back off the crossbar with Steve Harper in the Terriers' goal well beaten.

Kevin Muscat saw his effort deflected wide by Dyson after Julian Watts' mistake had put Huddersfield under pressure.

Muscat was then booked by referee Roy Pearson for a foul on Smith before Paul Dalton hit Town's first shot of the match well over the bar from 30 yards out.

Carl Robinson was shown the yellow card at the start of the second half for a foul on Marcus Stewart before Dougie Freedman blazed over from eight yards out on 50 minutes.

Dalton and Mixu Paatelainen were then both booked for dissent as the game finally showed signs of sparking into life, with Simon Osborn seeing his speculative drive drift over.

Dalton's 25-yard freekick was well saved by Stowell before Dyson was cautioned for a foul on Robinson. Substitute Paul Barnes was unfortunate to see his rasping effort fly just over on 78 minutes after he had cut inside and evaded Muscat's challenge.

Steve Bull, who scored a last-minute winner against Bradford earlier this week to bring up 300 goals for Wolves, nearly put his side ahead on 89 minutes but Harper beat away his fierce drive.

Dyson then popped up to grab the vital goal but even then Atkins wasted a glorious chance to snatch a draw as his close-range effort flew over.
