WOLVES REPORTS 1997-1998

Wolverhampton 2 Bradford 1

Steve Bull stepped off the substitutes bench to score a dramatic last minute winner for Wolves - and take his goal tally for the club to exactly 300.

Bull had been absent for three-and-a-half months following a knee operation and was only put on the bench as an afterthought by manager Mark McGhee.

But he went on in place of Don Goodman in the 74th minute to score a goal that had Molineux in raptures at the securing of three precious points.

Bull reacted quickly as Lee Naylor crossed from the left, the striker's header hitting the foot of the far post before rolling into the net.

The Wolves club captain responded by removing his jersey in celebration, having been made to wait since October 14th to reach his latest astonishing landmark.

Earlier, Wolves had seen a potential match-winning grip removed by Bradford's spirited second half revival.

The home side picked off after a quiet start to go in front in the 43rd minute when Paul Simpson's corner from the right was cleared only as far as Carl Robinson, whose superb volley from 19 yards flew into the top of the net.

Robinson's third goal of the season might have been followed by a fourth just before the hour but the Welsh Under 21 international was foiled by Gary Walsh's fine diving save.

Simon Osborne and Dean Richards were also close to a second Wolves goal while Dougie Freedman, having brought a fine first half save from Walsh, was penalised for knocking the ball out of the keeper's hands before tapping home.

But Bradford came alive through the trickery of Peter Beagrie and equalised in the 58th minute when Robbie Blake drove home right-footed when set up inside the area by strike partner Edinho.

Mike Stowell then had to beat down a rising drive from Jamie Lawrence before Blake missed a golden chance of putting Bradford in front six minutes from time.

The 21-year-old dispossessed former Bradford man Richards and took off towards goal before firing over with only Stowell to beat.

Wolves are now two points clear of arch rivals West Brom in sixth place and will be relieved at recording a home win after two successive league defeats at Molineux.
