WOLVES REPORTS 1997-1998

Wolves 3 Charlton 0

Wolves progressed to a fifth-round FA Cup tie at Wimbledon on a night Charlton will want to forget as quickly as possible.

The Londoners' midfielder Matty Holmes was carried off with a suspected broken leg; they lost 3-0 despite having the better of the first half, and then they had Mark Bright sent off in the closing stages.

It was a busy night all round for the over officious referee Graham Poll, who booked another four Charlton players and three from Wolves.

But for Wolves' teenager Lee Naylor it was a night to remember, because the 17-year-old full-back scored on only his third appearance for the club.

Charlton have not won at Wolves since 1953, and the omens continued to look bad when Holmes suffered what appeared to be a very serious leg injury after five minutes following a tackle by Wolves defender Kevin Muscat.

The game was held up for three minutes while Holmes got medical attention before going off to hospital.

The visitors then made the early running, but it was Wolves who got the breakthrough after 29 minutes when a poor back pass from Charlton midfielder Mark Kinsella put goalkeeper Andy Petterson under pressure.

Wolves' striker Dougie Freedman went for the kill but was tripped by the goalkeeper, and then from the penalty home captain Keith Curle stepped up to coolly put the ball wide of Petterson's reach for his second goal of the season.

Charlton did not deserve to be behind, and to underline their poor fortune Steve Jones hit the post.

But the second half belonged to Wolves, who were two ahead three minutes after the break.

Don Goodman crossed from the right, and Naylor rose at the far post to score with a perfectly timed header.

On 65 minutes the replay was settled when Darren Ferguson found Freedman on the left flank with a perfectly weighted pass.

Freedman delivered a low cross, and Finnish international Mixu Paatelainen nipped in behind two Charlton defenders to tap home.

To end Charlton's misery, forward Bright was shown the red card just two minutes later for what appeared to be stamping on Wolves goalkeeper Mike Stowell.
