Nicky Maynard grabbed an 87th-minute equaliser as Bristol City fought back from two goals down to claim a point against Championship leaders Wolves.

Robins goalkeeper Adriano Basso was twice punished for schoolboy errors as the visitors scored either side of half-time through Neill Collins and Matt Jarvis.

Victory would have taken Wolves seven points clear at the top of the table but City hit back in style and no-one contributed more to their fightback than half-time substitute Dele Adebola.

In the 58th minute the forward cut the gap with a clinical strike and with three minutes remaining he unselfishly teed up Maynard for a close-range equaliser.

Wolves had been handed a major boost prior to kick-off after second-placed Reading lost 2-0 at Swansea.

Yet the men from Molineux faced stern resistance from their hosts.

Robins midfielder Lee Johnson glanced a header wide in the 19th minute as City sought to make the breakthrough against a Wolves side thumped 3-1 at home by Preston last weekend.

It was their third successive league outing without a victory but Tuesday's 2-0 FA Cup third-round victory at Birmingham ensured they returned to winning ways.

However, it was City who made most of the running in this clash and Peter Styvar's 20-yard strike warmed Wayne Hennessey's hands in the 26th minute.

City posed more problems in the 29th minute when Cole Skuse hit a left-footed shot from 12 yards which drew a fine block from Richard Stearman.

Wolves showed little in the opening period but upped the tempo as the half wore on and full-back Matt Hill hit a 25-yard shot in the 34th minute which required Basso to be alert.

Stearman then earned the game's first yellow card in the 36th minute for a foul on Maynard but the visitors were ahead in the 45th minute thanks to a mistake from Basso.

The Brazilian missed Michael Kightly's lofted ball into the heart of the area and defender Collins headed into an empty net.

The conditions at a rainy and windswept Ashton Gate played their part but Basso erred once again to seemingly hand Wolves the points in the 54th minute.

His weak right-footed clearance fell to Kightly around 35 yards from goal and he quickly picked out Jarvis, who beat the offside trap and swept a superb finish home from 12 yards out.

However, City responded superbly and were rewarded when Adebola reduced the arrears in the 58th minute.

Maynard slipped him in down the left-hand channel and Adebola strode forward and drove a low left-foot shot beyond Hennessey.

Jarvis almost grabbed a third for Wolves on the hour mark with a shot which drew a fine save from Basso.

City defender Bradley Orr then narrowly failed to hit the target and Adebola and Liam Fontaine also went close before the equaliser arrived with three minutes remaining.

Adebola broke clear down the left flank and laid a low cross into the path of Maynard, who took a touch before rifling the ball home from 10 yards.
