Wolves became the first team in English football to score 7,000 league goals
on their way to a comfortable victory over Sheffield Wednesday.
Glenn Hoddle's play-off chasing side reached the landmark in the 35th minute
on a chilly night at Hillsborough as Darren Anderton arrived in the box to steer
into the bottom corner.
And when Scotland striker Kenny Miller climbed off the bench to improve that
milestone by one more in the second half it was game over for Wednesday.
Hoddle made three changes to the team beaten 2-0 by Reading on Boxing Day,
with Jody Craddock replacing the injured Gabor Gyepes, Colin Cameron starting in
place of Rohan Ricketts and George Ndah returning to the starting line-up to
replace Miller.
Paul Ince was named as a substitute - the club captain has been out for much
of the season with a thigh injury - but it was Seol Ki-Hyeon who stole the show
in the early stages.
The South Korean drove his side forward with some purposeful running from
midfield as Wolves made the brighter start - but far too often his final ball
failed to match the approach work.
There was little goalmouth action of note and even with the return to the
starting line-up of striker David Graham, Wednesday were struggling to create
much.
Glenn Whelan did have a 25-yarder hacked clear by Craddock but it was not
until the 35th minute that the game sparked into life as Anderton clocked up the
landmark goal.
Lee Naylor was the architect with a driving run down the left and when he cut
the ball back Anderton expertly steered the ball home from 12 yards.
Wednesday sought to respond immediately and Graham Coughlan should have done
better two minutes later, but his header flew past the post.
Both managers clearly sensed there was a need for an injection of pace and
there was a change for each side at the break.
Chris Brunt came on in place of Steve Adams for Wednesday and he was
immediately involved as he curled a free-kick just past the post.
But it was the introduction of Miller for Ndah that had the biggest impact and
within 18 minutes of coming on the wantaway Wolves striker had scored.
Miller's days at Molineux appear to be numbered after he spurned the offer of
a new contract, with Rangers apparently keen to take him back north of the
border in January.
But the Scotland international made sure that if he does go next month he will
leave Wolves on good terms after he pounced in the box to drill home the second
after 62 minutes.
Again Wednesday were sparked into life by conceding and Brunt flashed another
effort wide before Richard Wood headed close. But it was all Wolves now, with
Miller pulling the strings.
He was tormenting the Wednesday defence, while strike partner Vio Ganea almost
got in on the act after 89 minutes with a header that flashed wide.
To their credit, Wednesday never threw in the towel and in injury time Chris
Eagles' 25-yarder had Stefan Postma looking worried but it was all too little,
too late.
