A stoppage-time equaliser from substitute Leon Clarke saved Wolves from a
Molineux defeat at the hands of relegation-threatened Gillingham.
Gillingham took the lead for the second time in the 90th minute when Michael
Flynn broke clear ahead of Clarke bundling home a leveller inside stoppage
time.
But Clarke made sure Glenn Hoddle's side avoided an embarrassing home defeat
with his late strike.
The Priestfield strugglers went into the clash lying third bottom of the table
but took a second-half lead when Darius Henderson capitalised on a defensive
error from Jody Craddock.
But the Black Country club restored parity just five minutes later when Kenny
Miller converted a cross from full-back Rob Edwards.
The hosts, playing their first fixture for 15 days, who threatened from a
12th-minute free-kick routine which saw Keith Andrews find Joleon Lescott in the
Gills penalty area.
Lescott, named captain for the day as Paul Ince was ruled out by a one-game
suspension, then turned and pulled the ball back for Seol Ki-Hyeon to drive into
the sidenetting - although team-mate Craddock, stationed behind the South Korean
international, appeared to have been better placed.
The visitors were then presented with their first opening after Craddock
failed to deal with Barry Ashby's long ball but goalkeeper Michael Oakes was
quickly off his line to deny Flynn.
Miller's attempted curler was blazed well wide of the Gillingham net with 20
minutes gone before Henderson rose highest in the Wolves box to head a Nicky
Southall corner over at the other end.
Then Southall went close to opening the scoring on the half-hour but his
20-yard free-kick effort rebounded from the woodwork.
Lee Naylor fired over from a set-piece at the other end and as the interval
approached, Gills keeper Steve Banks saved Olofinjana's shot on the turn.
Both sides ran out unchanged for the second half and it was in the 55th minute
Gillingham took the lead after Darren Byfield sprang the Wolves offside trap and
broke along the right wing before crossing into the danger area where Craddock
made a hash of what should have been an elementary clearance and presented the
ball to Henderson.
The Priestfield striker then made the best use of the time and space he was
gifted to slot a side-footed effort past Oakes from 18 yards out.
Wolves were soon back on terms though after Wales international Edwards teed
up the ball for Miller who had arrived at the near post to head the equaliser
past Banks.
Next Colin Cameron played Olofinjana into the box but Banks saved bravely from
the Nigerian.
There was another scare for Gills when Banks dropped a free-kick from Andrews
- but some panicky defending eventually forced the ball clear of the danger
zone.
But then, in the 90th minute, a long punt from Banks skimmed off the head of
Cameron and Flynn latched on to the ball before lofting the ball past Oakes.
The game was to take another twist though as Clarke, on as a 75th-minute
replacement for Seol, scrambled the ball home.
