Early goals from Ki-Hyeon Seol and Carl Cort were enough to fire Championship
strugglers Wolves into the fourth round of the FA Cup.
Millwall, who were beaten finalists in last season's competition, rarely
threatened in a poor display, and Glenn Hoddle secured his first victory as
Wanderers boss with ease.
Seol celebrated his 26th birthday in style with the opener after eight
minutes, before Cort's neat header made it two three minutes later.
Kenny Miller came close to adding a third after the break, but he was denied
twice by Lions goalkeeper Graham Stack.
Wolves made two changes from the side beaten 2-0 at Wigan on Tuesday, with
Matt Murray and Paul Ince coming in for Michael Oakes and Keith Andrews.
Stack, Anton Robinson, Peter Sweeney, Jody Morris and Barry Hayles all started
for Millwall as player-manager Dennis Wise made wholesale changes to his
line-up.
The home side got off to the perfect start, scoring from their first
noteworthy chance of the afternoon through Seol.
Millwall failed to clear following a spell of Wanderers pressure and, when the
ball fell to the South Korean on the edge of the area, he beat one man before
slamming the ball past Stack.
Wolves, who had drawn five and lost one of Hoddle's six games in charge before
today, doubled their advantage after just 11 minutes.
Mark Kennedy's inviting cross from the left was headed firmly downwards by
Cort and underneath the body of the goalkeeper for his eighth goal of the
season.
The home side were dominating, with defender Joleon Lescott volleying over the
crossbar from distance, and Kennedy sending a rasping 25-yard drive inches past
the upright shortly afterwards.
Lee Naylor was next to test Stack with a 30-yard effort which stung the palms
of the Lions keeper, while at the other end, Murray was finally called into
action to palm away a fierce shot from Sweeney.
Millwall brought on Joe Healy and Curtis Weston at the start of the second
half, but it was Wolves who continued to push forward.
Seol crossed for Miller to fire in a shot which was pushed around the post by
Stack. And from the resulting corner, Lescott rose highest but could only head
wide.
The Lions struggled to break down a stubborn Wolves defence, with a weak shot
from Hayles their first effort of the half in the 66th minute.
Wolves responded through a Miller volley which was caught by Stack, before
Morris found space on the edge of the area to send a right-footed effort past
the post.
Substitute Colin Cameron and influential midfielder Ince, back in harness
following a lengthy injury lay-off, both came close late on, but Wolves could
not add to their tally.
