Wolves took a giant step towards securing their place in the play-offs with a comfortable victory over in-form Millwall.

Midfielder Shaun Newton scored a rare double in between Colin Cameron's seventh goal of the season to send Wanderers above Nottingham Forest into fifth place in the table.

Newton gave Wolves the perfect start with his third goal of the campaign after just five minutes.

Striker Kenny Miller played in Scotland team-mate Cameron, who rounded Lions keeper Tony Warner.

His effort was cleared off the line but Newton - restored to the starting line-up in place of veteran Alex Rae - followed in the rebound.

Former England international Dennis Wise tried to lob Wolves keeper Matt Murray from 22 yards, but it was the home side that always looked more likely to extend their advantage.

Kenny Miller headed over Mark Kennedy's cross, while moments later George Ndah curled over the bar from distance.

But Wolves were never totally at ease against McGhee's men as forward Neil Harris responded for the visitors with a right-footed strike that flew over the crossbar on the half-hour mark.

Newton should have been been given the chance to score his second just before the break when Miller broke free, but his cross lacked accuracy and the opportunity went begging.

Millwall finished a niggly half strongly as Murray was forced to punch Wise's corner clear, before Harris spurned a great opportunity when he volleyed Robert Ryan's cross over the bar from inside the six-yard box.

Wolves made a positive start to the second half as former Hearts midfielder Cameron sent in a shot which Warner punched clear.

Murray had to be on his toes just past the hour when he tipped over David Livermore's shot from just outside the box and Ndah cleared the resulting corner.

The Wolves keeper also parried Paul Iffil's effort minutes later before Wolves stepped up a gear with two goals in as many minutes to clinch the points.

First, Cameron latched on to Denis Irwin's long ball and slotted past Warner on 78 minutes, but a better goal was to follow as Newton skipped past defender Ryan and struck home from a tight angle.
