Mark Kennedy and Kenny Miller both scored twice as Wolves ripped Gillingham
apart in a 6-0 win at Molineux.
Dave Jones' side, who had failed to break down a stubborn Stoke defence in a
goalless draw at home in midweek, blitzed the Gills with five goals in half an
hour.
Nathan Blake, returning after injury, opened the scoring and Colin Cameron
doubled their advantage before Kennedy (2) and Miller, with his first of the
afternoon, gave them an unassailable first-half lead.
Miller took his tally to 21 for the season with a sixth goal shortly after the
restart to complete the rout.
After a tentative opening, the home side took the lead in the 16th minute.
Skipper Paul Ince let fly with a stinging 25-yard drive which Gillingham
goalkeeper Vince Bartram did well to tip over.
From the resulting corner, Blake, who scored a hat-trick against the Gills
earlier this season, played a neat one-two with defender Paul Butler before
slotting the ball under Bartram.
Wolves doubled their lead six minutes later. Cameron, whose last goal came at
the Priestfield Stadium in October, collected the ball on the edge of the area,
flicked it up and lashed home on the half-volley.
The home side were rampant as Ince smashed a shot against the woodwork from
distance, before Kennedy all but ended the game as a contest with a third goal.
Blake played in Shaun Newton, whose drilled cross deflected into the winger's
path and he sidefooted home.
Wanderers added a fourth in first-half injury-time when Ince found Miller in
the area after a strong run, and he drilled the ball low past Bartram.
The home side were not done, though, and made it five straight from the
kick-off - Kennedy netting with an emphatic volley from the edge of the box.
The shell-shocked visitors found themselves six down just three minutes after
the restart. Newton's through-ball sent Miller clear, and he coolly slotted home
for his 15th goal in as many games.
Wolves refused to take their foot off the pedal as Blake came close with two
quick-fire efforts, while veteran defender Denis Irwin curled a free-kick
against a post with time ticking away.
