WOLVES REPORTS 2000-2001

Wolves 0 Crewe 0

Sir Jack Hayward was given a hero's reception on his return to Molineux _ but would have remained unimpressed by the turgid goalless draw with Crewe.

Wolves' owner-chairman has stayed away from his club's matches since November after being shaken by the hostility shown towards him and chief executive Jez Moxey after the defeat against Crystal Palace.

He was given a warm ovation by supporters today before kick-off but any hopes he had of a victory petered out as Wolves' unhappy run extended to only one home point out of nine in a week and a half.

The afternoon started reasonably brightly with the lively George Ndah twice going close. He saw a clear left-footed shot deflected wide of the near post and then turned a first-time shot into the hands of the diving Ademola Bankole from Adam Proudlock's centre.

Crewe, whose manager Dario Gradi believes several more points are needed for First Division safety, might gone ahead in their first serious attack when Rodney Jack worked the ball away from Ludo Pollet and keeper Michael Oakes, only for Lee Naylor to save the day with a tremendous tackle on Colin Little.

Crewe were left cursing their luck when skipper Shaun Smith took aim from 25 yards and hammered a tremendous shot against the outside of the post.

Wolves huffed and puffed for most of the second half after being reprieved when Oakes acrobatically kicked over a bouncing header from Efe Sodje and when Joleon Lescott escaped unpunished from a borderline challenge on David Wright.

Wolves, who had not drawn any of their previous 10 matches, had a series of half chances which fell largely to Cedric Roussel, but the striker was not sharp enough to take advantage in his first home start since moving from Coventry for #1.53million two months ago.
