Relegation-threatened Huddersfield completed a league double over Wolves for
the second successive season when they took three deserved points at a boggy
Molineux.
A ninth-minute goal from Delroy Facey gave Lou Macari's side another leg up in
their battle for First Division survival while Dave Jones had another reminder
of the tough task ahead of him if he is to deliver Premiership football to the
Black County.
Facey was gifted his opportunity by acting Wolves captain Ludo Pollet, who
blundered over a routine through-ball and allowed the striker to drive hard and
low past stranded Wolves keeper Michael Oakes.
The home team could not say they had not been warned, Facey having just seen a
close-range effort blocked fortuitously on the line by Lee Naylor after Andy
Booth had been allowed a free leap to a corner by Craig Armstrong.
On a pitch passed playable at lunch-time but extremely hazardous, Wolves
frequently became bogged down and took a long while to get going.
When they did, Carl Robinson was to the fore, the Welsh international
midfielder scooping a close-range chance into the hands of Nico Vaesen and then
glancing a header from Andy Sinton's centre and bringing a brilliant reflex
tip-over from the Belgian keeper.
Facey might have had a second when he brought a diving save from Oakes with an
angled shot after another mistake by the normally reliable Pollet, who was
playing under a cloud after unfortunate comments he was alleged to have made in
a French football magazine.
He and team-mate Mohammed Camara had spoken of the drinking habits of their
Wolves colleagues - and this performance did nothing to lift the spirits of the
team outplayed in midweek by Wimbledon.
Winger Lee Morris was unlucky not to add a second for the visitors when he
produced a left-footed shot that rebounded off the body of the diving Oakes and
up against the underside of the bar.
Wolves had plenty of the play from then on with recent £1.53million capture
Cedric Roussel on for the final 35 minutes in place of an ineffective Michael
Branch.
But their only worthwhile efforts on goal were long-range attempts by Naylor
from a free-kick and substitute Temuri Ketsbaia both being well saved by the
diving Vaesen.
