Grimsby 0 Wolves 2

By PA Sport Staff

A stunning goal from Adam Proudlock sealed a comfortable win for Wolves at relegation-threatened Grimsby.

Seven minutes from time the young striker crashed home a right-foot shot from 25 yards which gave keeper Danny Coyne no chance.

Wolves had taken the lead with a deflected Tony Dinning free-kick in the 66th minute. Grimsby's best effort came from Stuart Campbell, whose 20-yard effort was tipped over by Michael Oakes.

Wolves gave a full debut to Belgian striker Cedric Roussel and he tested Coyne with a right-foot shot from the edge of the box in the fifth minute.

Grimsby had a chance to take the lead from their first corner in the seventh minute. Campbell's kick was met at the far post by Peter Handyside, who powered a header straight at Oakes.

Oakes kept Wolves in the game with a fine save in the 26th minute. Campbell picked up the ball 30 yards out and tried a right-foot shot which was dipping under the bar until Oakes dived to his right and tipped over.

Then left-back Tony Gallimore tried a curler with his right foot from 20 yards which just cleared the far post.

Roussel then picked up a loose ball on the edge of the box and tried a snap shot which was inches wide of the post with Coyne beaten.

Wolves' opener from Dinning had a touch of fortune about it. Paul Groves was penalised for bringing down Proudlock on the edge of the box. The free-kick was touched to Dinning whose shot took a big deflection and bounced past the stranded Coyne.

Grimsby tried to hit back and when Danny Butterfield's cross from the right found Donovan, whose first-time shot was pushed away by Oakes.

Grimsby sent on striker Bradley Allen in a bid to rescue a point but it was Donovan who again went close when his close-range shot was deflected over the bar.

But Wolves made the game safe in the 83rd minute. Proudlock was allowed to pick up possession 40 yards out and with the defence back-pedalling he fashioned a dipping right-foot shot which flew past Coyne.

Grimsby sent on Chinese international defender Xhang Enhua as a striker but failed to create a single chance.
