WOLVES REPORTS 2000-2001

Wolves 1 Gillingham 1

Wolves are still looking for their first League win under new manager Dave Jones after having to hang on for a draw against lively Gillingham.

Since kicking off his reign with an FA Cup victory at Nottingham Forest, Jones has witnessed 1-1 home draws against Portsmouth and now Gillingham either side of a cup exit at Wycombe.

And this was a case of one point gained rather than two lost on the balance of play as the Kent club were generally the more likely to take all three points.

The Gills were quick from the starting blocks and frequently caused problems to a home defence in which Paul Butler made a solid return following his midweek permanent move from Sunderland.

Although Adam Proudlock fired over from close range from a fine cross by Lee Naylor, it was the visitors who threatened the greater and Marlon King was denied in a one-on-one opening set-up by Paul Shaw.

Shaw's cross was then headed wide by Mark Saunders before the opening goal arrived in the 27th minute.

Saunders' short pass found Shaw and his dangerous cross was arrowed onto the head of King, who made no mistake by applying the finishing touch for his fourth goal of the season.

Saunders was then booked for dissent before Wolves, having gone close when Naylor's low 25 yarder was pushed wide by former Molineux reserve keeper Vince Bartram, equalised against the run of play deep in first half injury-time.

Kevin Muscat and Tony Dinning paved the way and Michael Branch controlled neatly to rifle a low right foot drive beyond Bartram from 15 yards.

In the second half, Muscat saw a dangerous centre cut out by Barry Ashby and also brought a comfortable diving save in the last couple of minutes.

But Gillingham were the more likely winners and Saunders saw a header to Nicky Southall's corner nodded off the line by Naylor before Oakes dived to push wide Southall's 25 yard shot.

Substitute Carl Asaba fired powerfully wide while Dinning survived penalty appeals when he tangled with a Gillingham forward close to goal.
