On-loan Chelsea striker Sam Parkin came off the bench to score the late goal
that earned Second Division Wycombe a place in the FA Cup fifth round at the
expense of First Division Wolves at Adams Park.
Substitute Parkin, who was given special permission by Chelsea to play, headed in Steve Brown's 85th-minute cross to condemn the Molineux
outfit to defeat.
Carl Robinson had looked like earning Wolves a replay with a 59th-minute goal
that had cancelled out Andy Rammell's first-half opener for the Chairboys.
The result was harsh on Wolves as Wycombe, playing in their first ever FA Cup
fourth round tie, were outplayed for most of the match as Dave Jones' side
dominated the battle of the Wanderers, twice hitting the woodwork through
Michael Branch and Robinson.
But Wycombe boss Lawrie Sanchez, who famously scored the goal which won
Wimbledon the FA Cup against Liverpool in 1988, would have been proud of the way
his side battled to earn themselves a place in the last 16.
Rammell put his side ahead when he bundled the ball over the line after Wolves
goalkeeper Mike Stowell had failed to claim Matthew Brady's 36th-minute corner.
But Wolves deservedly drew level when left-back Lee Naylor surged forward and
crossed for Robinson, who powered a near-post header into the far corner of the
net, leaving Wycombe goalkeeper Martin Taylor with no chance.
Rammell had been unlucky not to have scored a minute before his goal when he
drilled a shot across goal but the ball came back off the far post.
Wolves hit the woodwork in the 23rd minute when Adam Proudlock curled in an
inviting pass to Michael Branch, who used his knee to volley the ball over
Taylor and against the crossbar before the Wycombe goalkeeper gratefully
gathered the rebound.
And the visitors were again unlucky after the break when Branch teased his way
into the box from the right and his cross deflected into the path of Robinson
whose header cannoned back off the crossbar and away to safety.
Both sides had good chances in the opening minutes as the match got off to a
lively start.
Wycombe's Michael Simpson chipped the ball just over the crossbar from the
corner of the penalty area before Ludovic Pollet struck an 18-yard drive
agonisingly wide of the post for the visitors after the home side had failed to
clear a corner.
Branch, enjoying plenty of space on the right, took off on a wonderful,
dribbling run in the 22nd minute which ended with the former Everton player
arrowing a drive from a narrow angle straight at Taylor.
Shortly after the half-hour mark, Proudlock thumped a low shot just past the
post as the First Division side continued to have the better of proceedings.
In the second-half, Sinton drove in a powerful shot which was touched onto the
side-netting by Taylor before a flowing, 55th-minute move involving Sinton and
Branch resulted in Robinson firing in a shot from just inside the box which was
turned away by Taylor.
Wolves continued to have the better of the proceedings but the home side never
gave up and Parkin, who had replaced Andy Baird, to send the record-breaking
Adams Park crowd into delirious celebration and leave Wolves shell-shocked.
