Battling Bolton staged a sensational second-half comeback to move within a
point of the First Division play-off zone.
Goals from Claus Jensen and Eidur Gudjohnsen cancelled out a strike from
Ludovic Pollet to see off the challenge of Wolves, who also remain in play-off
contention despite their defeat.
Wanderers were full value for the victory, although their season looked to be
coming to an end when deep into first-half stoppage time Pollet headed Wolves
into the lead from a Darren Bazeley cross.
But Jensen pulled Bolton back into the picture on the hour with a tremendous
free-kick before Gudjohnsen brought the Reebok Stadium to its feet with a goal
of stunning quality 20 minutes from time.
Gudjohnsen banked his 20th goal of the season when he cut in from the right
before unleashing a fierce left-foot shot to beat impressive Wolves goalkeeper
Michael Oakes.
Wolves could thank Oakes for a succession of outstanding saves which prevented
them smarting from a heavier defeat.
Three times in the second half Oakes was at his very best to deny Gudjohnsen,
Allan Johnston and Dean Holdsworth.
Bolton dominated from the first minute and could have been ahead straight
away, Oakes pulling of the first of several superb saves when a Jensen free-kick
caught a deflection off the Wolves wall.
Wolves threatened only occasionally but stunned the home side four minutes
into first-half injury time through player-of-the-year Pollet.
Wolves felt they may have had a penalty when Michael Branch appeared to be
upended by Paul Ritchie early in the second half, but the game's true turning
point arrived after 51 minutes.
Neil Emblen ghosted in behind the home defence and his header seemed certain
to put Wolves two up only four Bolton keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen to pull off a
marvellous one-handed save diving at full stretch to his right.
Bolton were immediately lifted and skipper Mike Whitlow should have equalised
when he headed over from three yards.
But Bolton were not to be denied and two goals in 10 minutes from Jensen and
Gudjohnsen means they now trail sixth-placed Huddersfield by just one point with
a home game against Norwich the final fixture on Sunday.
Wolves are now two points adrift of Bolton and three behind Huddersfield,
going into the last round of matches as the outsiders.
