Huddersfield striker Martin Smith netted twice before the break at the
McAlpine Stadium to keep Colin Lee's Wolves out of the play-off picture.
His first came after 20 minutes when he drove a low shot through keeper
Michael Oakes legs. Then 15 minutes later he slotted home from close range after
strike partner Clyde Wijnhard found him with a cross from the right.
Smith gave an early indication of his threat when he sent a low drive wide
after just four minutes.
Kenny Irons tried his luck next when he had Oakes scrambling across his goal
with a fierce drive from 18 yards.
Huddersfield finally broke the deadlock after 20 minutes when Smith notched
his 16th goal of the season.
Wijnhard collected Chris Lucketti's ball on the left and sent in a low cross
for Smith to round Keith Curle and slot the ball through Oakes' legs.
Wolves finally recorded their first effort on 24 minutes when Michael Branch
fired over a Neil Emblem flick-on from Kevin Muscat's throw.
Huddersfield increased their lead ten minutes later, with Wijnhard again the
provider.
The Dutchman chased a lost cause down the right and, with the ball looking
like it was going out of play, he managed to centre it towards Smith.
With Oakes only able to parry his first effort, the striker was handed the
simple opportunity of stabbing home from six-yards.
Huddersfield continued to press and Dean Gorre found Wijnhard on the edge of
the area but the striker sent his shot wide.
Then Gorre and Smith exchanged passes resulting in the former Sunderland man
testing Oakes reflexes with a snapshot from 15 yards.
In one of Wolves' rare attacks, Ade Akinbiyi hooked a right foot shot past
Nico Vaesen's left-hand post in the 39th minute.
The home side's superiority showed again as Chris Holland sent a vicious drive
just wide on the stroke of half-time.
It was a similar story after the break as Huddersfield kept the pressure on
Oakes' goal, with the keeper forced to save bravely at Wijnhard's feet just
after the hour.
Smith was denied a hat-trick by a brilliant reflex save from Oakes on 65
minutes when he punched the striker's powerful header clear
The visitors only manage two clear cut chances in the second-half, with
Ludovic Pollet and Akinbiyi both heading their opportunities wide.
