Teenager Will Hoskins was the hero for Rotherham after his late double strike
sealed victory over shell-shocked Wigan.
The home side had dominated the first-half without finding the target, but
17-year-old Hoskins' introduction after an hour proved a master stroke by boss
Ronnie Moore.
The striker scored his first senior goal with nine minutes remaining after an
assist from John Mullin, and slotted home the second two minutes later to extend
his side's unbeaten run to eight games.
Nathan Ellington pulled one back for the home side in injury time but his
headed effort proved only to be a consolation.
Rotherham stuck with the same side that beat Bradford last time out as skipper
Martin McIntosh failed to recover from an ankle injury in time.
Wigan boss Paul Jewell decided to bring in defender Ian Breckin after his one
match suspension, with Paul Mitchell dropping to the bench.
Elsewhere, Leighton Baines started in place of Alan Rogers and Michael Flynn
came in for Andy Liddell.
And the Latics were first to threaten when striker Lee McCulloch let fly with
a shot that was caught by Michael Pollitt in the Rotherham goal.
The game was struggling to flow but Wigan managed to fashion another chance in
the ninth minute, again through McCulloch.
He latched onto a cross from Gary Teale but could not keep his shot down and
it flew over the bar.
Jewell's men almost turned their dominance into a lead on the half hour but a
header from inside the box by Jason De Vos was brilliantly saved by Pollitt.
Darren Byfield managed a shot for the visitors as the half drew to a close,
but it was saved by John Filan.
The Latics announced their attacking intentions shortly after the break with
Jimmy Bullard unleashing a shot form 35 yards out, but it missed on the left.
However, the visitors almost snatched the lead against the run of play when
Byfield hit the woodwork after 54 minutes.
His strike partner Butler crossed and Byfield's left-footed effort was denied
by the frame of the goal.
The Millers were spurred on by that chance and Chris Swailes' header seconds
later was saved by Filan.
Although Wigan had been pushed onto the back foot, they struck back through
two efforts from the lively McCulloch. Both his drilled shot and his close-range
header, however, were saved by Pollitt.
The game was then turned on its head with Hoskins, who came on for Byfield,
grabbing a brace.
First his right-footed shot from inside the box found the target, and he
repeated the feat moments later to seal the win, and Ellington's header from
Teale's cross came too late for Wigan.
