Tottenham put Wednesday's FA Cup humiliation at Newcastle behind them with an easy victory over Watford.

David Ginola struck his first Premiership goal of the season with a superb 27th minute solo effort at White Hart Lane.

And as the French winger produced a first-half master-class, Steffen Iversen nodded in a second goal - his 12th this season - just six minutes later.

Tim Sherwood's second-half double completed an easy Tottenham win over Watford.

Spurs could have had three goals in the first five minutes.

Sherwood's pass gave Iversen an opening on the edge of the box after Mauricio Taricco halted a penetrating run by Watford's Michel Ngonge in the first minute, but the Norwegian striker dragged his shot wide of the far post.

Then a quick free-kick gave Steve Carr a run down the right and his cross picked out unmarked Allan Nielsen whose attempted header failed to make contact in front of a gaping goal.

Sol Campbell did better, launching himself at Ginola's cross a minute later, but his effort was also off target and Watford began to draw confidence from these early narrow escapes.

David Perpetuini, making his first Premiership start, sent Ngonge away down the middle but he fired wide of the Spurs goal, ignoring the supporting run of co-striker Tommy Smith.

Neil Cox and Smith fired further efforts off target but Watford were caught out by a brilliant counter-attacking run by Ginola for the opening goal after 27 minutes.

Ginola's powerful drive just two minutes earlier had been saved at the second attempt by Alec Chamberlain but the Watford keeper had no chance when the Frenchman sprinted down the left, cut inside past the challenge of Cox and then continued his run across the edge of the penalty area before drilling a right-foot shot into the corner.

Nielsen had a fierce goalbound drive blocked and no Spurs forward could get the vital touch to Chris Armstrong's low cross after a mistake by Paul Robinson, but Iversen added Tottenham's second in the 33rd minute with a deft downward header from another Armstrong cross on the right.

Ginola almost made it three just before the break but his curling drive from 25 yards way out on the left drifted just beyond the far post with Chamberlain hopelessly beaten.

Graham Taylor's triple substitution at the start of the second half was a clear sign of Watford's desperation - but it made little difference.

Spurs continued to dominate and were often in cruise control before another piece of Ginola mastery produced a third goal in the 56th minute.

Armstrong had already seen a fine effort fly just inches over the crossbar when Ginola teased and tormented two defenders before sending over the perfect cross from the right for Tim Sherwood to head home with ease beyond helpless goalkeeper Chamberlain.

But Spurs' fans angrily jeered manager George Graham for substituting French star Ginola 16 minutes from the end.

But it did not affect Spurs' domination and Sherwood added the fourth in the closing minutes.
