Ulises De La Cruz powered forward for the home side, but his well-struck shot was blocked by Anthony Gardner.
Tottenham carved out a half-chance in the 47th minute when Brown picked out Fredi Kanoute - but his header was off target.
Villa hit back immediately, and Hitzlsperger rattled the bar from 18 yards after Solano had laid the ball into his path.
Then Barry and Gavin McCann both made space on the edge of the area only to see their respective thunderous efforts go wide.
There was a scare for Villa in the 58th minute when Simon Davies cut inside and rattled in a shot which Sorensen did well to beat away.
Yet the home side continued to look full of confidence, especially Barry who was bossing the midfield.
At least Tottenham had stepped up the tempo in the second half after looking weary early on.
