Robbie Keane restored some pride to Tottenham's season with a double strike to silence the West Bromwich Albion boo boys.

Keane responded to the torrid time he had been given all afternoon on account of his previous Wolves connections by racing onto Ledley King's through-ball and sweeping home an 85th-minute winner.

It was a superb response from Glenn Hoddle's troops, who had been savaged themselves when their Good Friday mauling by Manchester City left their European hopes in tatters.

But already-relegated Albion were left to rue familiar defensive frailties as they twice blew the lead on an entertaining if largely meaningless afternoon.

Daniele Dichio had put Albion ahead in the 25th minute before Keane's low shot brought the visitors level in first-half injury-time.

And Spurs responded immediately to substitute Neil Clement's stunning 62nd-minute free-kick when Teddy Sheringham bundled the ball home after a goalmouth scramble less than a minute later.

Gary Megson's men might have been resigned to their season's fate but at least they are still attempting to go down fighting.

The home side had started well with Ronnie Wallwork's audacious long-range effort easily held by Kasey Keller and Dichio almost reaching Jason Roberts' fine pass into the box.

Spurs' only real threat came from Keane, who shrugged off the home fans' hearty boos in style.

He was only denied by a superb low save from Hoult in the 20th minute after he fired a trademark overhead kick from 12 yards from Steve Carr's long throw.

Albion responded well and three minutes later Dichio grabbed the lead with his eighth goal of the season.

The big striker rose above Dean Richards to head Jason Koumas' superb right-wing cross past a helpless Keller.

Andy Johnson failed to trouble Keller from long-range and Koumas came close with a fierce drive after Johnson's initial header had been beaten away by the Tottenham keeper.

Then Roberts thought he had ended his five-month goal drought when he won a race with Richards onto the end of a long boot out of the Albion box and poked the ball home.

But Roberts and Richards were the only men in the stadium who did not realise that referee Paul Durkin had already blown up for an infringement in the centre circle.

Durkin did not please the home supporters by booking Larus Sigurdsson for dissent and Roberts for a foul on Richards.

And Keane dismayed the home fans with his equaliser in first half injury time when he finished off an exquisite one-two with Sheringham by sliding the ball under Hoult.

Gustavo Poyet came on at half-time for Spurs' ineffective Japanese debutant Kazuyuki Toda and the Uruguayan came close straight away with a fierce drive which flashed inches wide of Hoult's left-hand post.

Roberts saw his point-blank effort bundled over the crossbar by Keller before substitute Clement, introduced moments earlier for Ife Udeze, announced his arrival by smashing an unstoppable 20-yard free-kick to put Albion back in front.

But Sheringham and Keane combined to ensure that Albion's lead lasted only a minute.

Sheringham took a free-kick short on the edge of the Albion box and Keane's lobbed effort fell into the path of Goran Bunjevcevic, whose shot rattled the crossbar.

Sheringham was there to poke home the best of rebounds and regain a share of the lead in the Tottenham top-scorers' table with his strike partner.

Spurs upped the pace with Etherington hitting the side netting from 20 yards and Carr bringing a fine save out of Hoult.

And Keane had the last laugh on the fans who had been booing him when he lashed home the winner five minutes from time.
