Matthew Piper scored his first goal for Leicester - and a vital one at that -
as the curtain came down at Filbert Street.
The young striker grabbed the winner in the club's final match at the ground
after 111 years.
It was only Leicester's fifth victory in the Premiership and their relegation
fate had been sealed weeks ago.
But with the new Walkers Stadium scheduled to be opened for Nationwide League
business and players like Piper about they have cause for optimism.
His goal capped a fine individual performance and Leicester's fighting spirit
had to be applauded.
Teddy Sheringham put Spurs ahead from the penalty spot only for Paul Dickov to
pull Leicester level.
Tottenham began brightly and Gus Poyet picked out Stephen Clemence who had run
from deep to the edge of the area.
His shot was firmly struck but drifted just wide of keeper Ian Walker's
left-hand post.
Poyet then fired wide from an acute angle after being put under pressure from
defender Jon Ashton.
Leicester hit back and Lee Marshall went on a good run down the right but his
cross was over-hit and Spurs were able to clear.
Darren Anderton knocked the ball into the area and the ball spun off Marshall
into Sheringham's path. However, he was unable to make a decent connection.
Spurs keeper Kasey Keller was tested for the first time after 18 minutes when
Piper delivered a cross from the right.
The American did well to punch away a header from Izzet, who is anxious to
stay in the top flight and has been a target for Middlesbrough.
Sheringham was seeing plenty of the ball and got on the end of Steffen
Iversen's flick but his volley carried little power.
Piper then made a good break for Leicester, only to see his shot spin off
Mauricio Tarrico and go for a corner.
Spurs, however, were having the majority of possession and Anderton and
Sheringham linked up in a good move.
Sheringham found Iversen but the finish was wasteful, his 20-yard shot going
high into the crowd.
Izzet then went on a surging run that took him into the heart of the Spurs
defence.
He laid the ball into the path of Dickov, in acres of space on the left.
But the former Manchester City striker snatched at his shot and it went over
the top.
Spurs continued to play some nice football and Anderton released Sheringham
with a neat reverse pass.
He weighed up his options before crossing the ball into the area, only for
Callum Davidson to clear as Iversen waited for any mistake.
Izzet almost made the breakthrough in the 47th minute when he latched onto a
crossfield pass from Dickov, only to see his shot narrowly clear the crossbar.
Leicester keeper Walker then made a superb save from Sheringham after he
rattled in a shot from 20 yards.
But Sheringham was not to be denied and put Spurs ahead in the 53rd minute
from the penalty spot.
He thumped his effort beyond Walker after Marshall had brought down Clemence
with a sliding tackle.
It was Sheringham's 13th goal of a season that has seen him rewarded with a
place in the World Cup squad.
But Spurs were stunned in the 59th minute when Leicester hit back to draw
level.
Spurs defender Chris Perry made a block tackle on Marshall but the ball broke
to Dickov, who smashed a shot into the corner.
The home fans turned up the volume after the Scottish front man's fifth goal
since arriving from Maine Road.
Leicester went ahead after 71 minutes through Piper. He got on the end of Matt
Elliott's flick following a throw in from Alan Rogers to head the ball beyond
Keller.
Dickov then made way for Gerry Taggart, making his first appearance in 14
months following a knee injury as they sealed a rare victory.
