George Graham was the man who prompted that famous song: "One-nil to the
Arsenal," when he enjoyed a highly successful spell as manager at Highbury.
Now they are thinking up a new tune for the Tottenham boss after his side
played out their fourth successive 0-0 draw in the Premiership.
England head coach Sven-Goran Eriksson came to White Hart Lane to see Spurs
for the first time this season - and like everybody else he must have gone home
bitterly disappointed.
We hoped we were in for a bright afternoon as Spurs won a freekick on the left
edge of the Charlton box in the first 30 seconds when Radostin Kishishev fouled
Stephen Clemence.
The ball was swung into a crowded box by Darren Anderton - one of the men
hoping to impress Eriksson - and Gary Doherty hooked it over the bar.
But it proved to be a false dawn, and there was only one shot on target in a
poor first half.
Loan signing Andy Booth was making his home debut for Spurs and after a quiet
start he flashed a shot over the Charlton bar after 20 minutes.
Ironically, Booth scored when he last played against Charlton, in a 3-0 win
for Sheffield Wednesday two years ago, and how Spurs could have done with a
repeat of that.
The one moment of vision in the half came a minute later when Spurs striker
Sergei Rebrov fed the ball into the box and Oyvind Leonhardsen got there before
Sasa Ilic but screwed it wide.
Charlton had the only serious effort on target after 26 minutes when Anderton
conceded a free kick just outside his own box. Jensen curled the ball over the
wall but Sullivan had plenty of time to dive to his right and save.
After 35 minutes Spurs won a freekick in a dangerous position just outside the
Charlton box, but Clemence hit a weak effort into the base of the wall.
That led to the first round of booing from the home fans, followed by chants
of "Graham out".
Charlton won a corner after 41 minutes but Jensen's low cross to the near post
was disappointing, and Clemence easily cleared.
The last hope for Spurs came from a freekick for hand ball 20 yards out. It
was tapped to Anderton but another weak effort was easily blocked.
This clash is of course a dress rehearsal for Wednesday's FA Cup fourth round
tie at the Valley, but there were few clues being offered as to who will earn a
home tie against Stockport in the next round.
Anderton had a chance to impress Eriksson four minutes into the second half
when Spurs won a free kick on the left edge of the box after Booth was fouled.
The Spurs wing-back cleared the Charlton wall with his effort, but is flew
past the near post without troubling Ilic.
At the other end, Sullivan was smartly off his line two minutes later to
gather the ball as Mathias Svensson chased a through ball from strike partner
Shaun Bartlett.
That was followed after 52 minutes by a good 20-yard shot from Kishishev,
which flew just over Sullivan's bar.
Freund has never scored for Spurs, but forced the first save from Ilic after
56 minutes. Anderton's corner was cleared to the edge of the box and the German
midfield spoiler drilled a shot into the goalkeeper's body.
Anderton showed good skill down the right after 58 minutes when he beat two
men, but he over-hit the cross with only Clemence arriving in the box.
It went downhill for Anderton three minutes later when he pulled back Jensen
and was booked for disputing the decision with referee David Elleray.
It was time for Graham to make a change, and after 65 minutes he brought off
Ledley King and Clemence and replaced them with Tim Sherwood and Matthew
Etherington.
Charlton should have scored after 70 minutes, following a rare mistake by
Campbell, but they let Spurs off the hook.
The England defender lost control in his own 18-yard box and the ball fell
invitingly for Bartlett. But the South African drilled his shot straight at
Sullivan's legs, and then Jensen blasted the rebound over the bar.
The lack of confidence and sharpness that has afflicted £11million Ukrainian
striker Rebrov was highlighted after 74 minutes.
Freund made a good run down the right and fed him in the box, but his tame
shot was saved low by Ilic. Three minutes later, Leonhardsen sent a looping
header wide of the post.
Substitute Matt Etherington carved out a half-chance for Leonhardsen after 82
minutes, playing a good ball into his path in the box, but the Norwegian slipped
as he hit his shot.
The home fans were pouring out of the exits long before Mr Elleray brought
this dull draw to a close.
