Sunderland went down 2-0 to Benfica in the Amsterdam Tournament.
The Black Cats, who have confirmed the signing of Lorik Cana from Marseille, went behind in the 32nd minute when Danny Collins brought down Javier Saviola in the area and Oscar Cardozo sent Marton Fulop the wrong way from the spot.
Maxi Pereira sealed the win for the Portuguese side with the second 10 minutes after the break.
