Sunderland defender Nyron Nosworthy is looking forward to being part of the new era at the Stadium of Light after signing his two-year contract extension.

The former Gillingham player agreed fresh terms with the Black Cats last week, ending speculation that he could leave the club.

Nosworthy was reported to be a target of Portsmouth in the summer, but he committed to Sunderland after drawn-out negotiations in order to be a part of the exciting times at the club.

The 29-year-old believes there are positive signs after owner Ellis Short obtained 100 per cent control in May before appointing manager Steve Bruce, who has guided the club to eighth in the Premier League.

Nosworthy told Sunderland's official website: "I'm delighted to sign for another two years.

"A lot's been going on at the club but I've been here for a while so people were concerned what was going on. These things take time and I'm pleased it's done and dusted.

"I've seen the ups and downs and these are definitely ups. This is the best start we've had since I've been here; the team's strong with plenty of depth and we've been doing very well at home.

"It's looking good all round. It was an easy decision to stay. Of course I had to make sure everything was right for myself and for the club."

Nosworthy said regarding his lack of first-team football: "The gaffer's been brilliant, he's made it easy for me and for everyone.

"It's not nice to not be playing but it's part and parcel of football and I have to ride it out and wait for my turn to come."
