Sunderland goalkeeper Craig Gordon admits he and his team-mates need to readdress their approach after suffering defeat at Birmingham.

Black Cats manager Steve Bruce's return to St Andrew's ended in disappointment as his team lost 2-1 in the Second City on Saturday.

Birmingham grabbed the points as Liam Ridgewell and James McFadden scored, with only a late Scott Dann own goal making things tense in the closing stages.

The setback was in stark contrast to Sunderland's recent beach ball-assisted win over Liverpool and Gordon admits that the performance against the Blues was not satisfactory.

The Scotland international said in The Sun: "It was very disappointing because we didn't really compete. It is back to the drawing board.

"The manager said we only started playing in the last quarter and that's not enough. He's right.

"It would have been deceptive had we got a point, but we would take it."
