Stoke defender Danny Pugh has signed a one-year extension to his current contract at the Britannia Stadium.

The new deal will keep the former Manchester United youngster at Stoke until the summer of 2007.

Pugh, who has struggled to hold down a regular place this season, has been linked with a move away from the club but Tony Pulis is keen to keep hold of the 26-year-old.

The former Preston man was happy to ink his new contract after being reassured that he remains part of Pulis' plans.

"The manager told me I still had a big part to play here and when you're not playing it is reassuring to hear that," Pugh told the Stoke Sentinel.

"I'm confident I do have a part to play and can get back into the team on a regular basis, even though we have such a big squad.

"I wouldn't say I had to think long and hard about signing a new contract, but obviously it is frustrating when you're not playing as much as you would want.

"Signing a new contract has given me a little boost to keep on working hard and to keep on aiming to get into the team."

Pulis was happy to reward Pugh with a new deal and believes the versatile performer is a key member of his squad.

"Danny has been excellent value for this football club in every respect," said Pulis.

"He's always been a good pro and thoroughly reliable, just the kind of player you want around the place and want to keep around the place."
