Jurgen Klinsmann was taken to hospital with a suspected broken jaw tonight as
Spurs went crashing out of the FA Cup fourth round at Barnsley.
Klinsmann was drafted into the side last month from Sampdoria in the hope of
rekindling his White Hart Lane career which yielded 20 goals in the 1994-95
season, but was stretchered off in the 80th minute.
With Spurs trailing 2-1, Klinsmann and Adie Moses went for a high ball just
outside the centre circle.
The Germany skipper landed awkwardly and it was
immediately clear he was in trouble as he lay screaming in agony on the ground.
The Tottenham trainer raced to his aid and turned him onto his side before the
veteran striker was carried off to the dressing room and then taken to straight
to hospital.
Ashley Ward, Neil Redfearn scored first for the Tykes, David Ginola giving
Spurs a brief glimpse of hope at 2-1 before Darren Barnard made it safe for
Barnsley.
With Klinsmann now set to miss the rest of the season, coach Christian Gross is
staring down the barrel of a gun.
Reports from inside White Hart Lane prior to the weekend suggested Gross would
need to win two out of the next three games if he was to keep his job.
But following a 2-1 loss at Derby on Saturday, an ignominious exit against
Barnsley means his position in the Spurs' hot seat is firmly on the line.
Tottenham disintegrated following the 50th-minute sending-off of midfielder
Stephen Clemence, son of former Tottenham and England great Ray.
Within eight minutes Danny Wilson's team of battlers were two goals up and on
their way to a lucrative fifth round clash at Manchester United.
Although the French flair of Ginola gave Tottenham a 72nd minute lifeline with
a majestic free-kick, Barnard rounded off a sensational Cup victory with the
goal of the night.
It was Barnsley striker Ward who took the first half plaudits as he was close
with four golden opportunities before finally making a deserved breakthrough in
the 51st minute.
Ward's career has found a new lease of life under Tykes boss Danny Wilson and
the crowd favourite should have sent Barnsley on their way after just 80
seconds.
Barnard teased in a free-kick to the heart of the Spurs area for Ward to flick
goalwards, only for Norwegian keeper Espen Baardsen to tip the ball round the
post.
It sparked a string of chances for either side over the next 20 minutes as
they fought virtually toe-to-toe to gain a vital foothold in the hope of
clinching the trip to Old Trafford.
His opposite number in the Barnsley goal, David Watson, was also in the thick
of the action as he produced goal-denying saves from both Les Ferdinand and
Ginola.
Then five minutes into the second half came the moment which turned the game
as Clemence was shown his marching orders for a second bookable offence after
diving in the penalty area.
Shown the yellow card for a 27th minute foul, Worcester referee Gerald Ashby
had no alternative but to send him off after he attempted to win a spot-kick
following a challenge from Moses.
Ray Clemence, watching from the stands, was left shaking his head as he
watched his son troop off the pitch to take an early bath.
Within seconds Barnsley were one-up.
Skipper Redfearn delivered a far post
cross for Ward to head home his seventh of the season.
Barnsley doubled their advantage in the 58th minute, again after another
defining moment in the game.
Teenage defender Chris Morgan cleared a Ruel Fox effort off the line and as
Spurs' players stood arguing among themselves Barnsley counter-attacked through
Martin Bullock who went on an amazing 70-yard run.
He dribbled his way past at least four Spurs challengers before finally firing
in a shot which Baardsen could only parry into the path of leading scorer
Redfearn to drive home his 10th of the season.
Ward had a 63rd minute effort disallowed for offside, while Barnard beat
Baardsen with a thunderous 20-yard drive only for his shot to crash against the
woodwork to safety.
Then came Ginola's wonderful free-kick after Morgan had brought down Ramon
Vega but Barnsley were not to be denied.
After Klinsmann had been stretchered off, Spurs' heads and hearts visibly
wilted, and Barnard capped a stirring display with the goal of the night.
It looks bleak for Gross, for Tottenham and above all for Klinsmann.
