Sam Allardyce will be able to relax safe in the knowledge Bolton will
be in top flight football for a fourth successive season.
Goals from Ivan Campo and Henrik Pedersen were enough to secure a
morale-boosting victory against Tottenham.
While Bolton boss Allardyce is entitled to give himself a pat on the back,
these are troubled times at White Hart Lane.
Acting manager David Pleat has seen his team pick up two points from a
possible 18 and they are too close to the bottom for comfort.
Allardyce recalled Jay-Jay Okocha and Youri Djorkaeff to the starting line-up
at the Reebok Stadium.
The experienced pair had been left on the bench last Monday when a vital
victory at Wolves was secured.
Defender Simon Charlton was also recalled at the expense of Anthony Barness.
Pleat was boosted by the return of Ledley King after a hip injury and Stephen
Kelly was also drafted in at the back with Stephen Carr sidelined through
suspension.
Bolton carved out a good chance in the second minute when Charlton launched
the ball forward.
Danish striker Henrik Pedersen got away from his marker only to drag the ball
narrowly wide of the far post.
Bolton made the breakthrough after seven minutes thanks to a rare goal from
Campo.
The former Real Madrid ace latched on to a pass from Okocha and rattled a
25-yard shot beyond goalkeeper Kasey Keller, who perhaps should have done
better.
Bolton kept up the pace and Keller did well to claw away a chip from Kevin
Nolan at his near post.
Okocha has yet to score in the top flight this season and saw a goal-bound
shot cannon off King to safety in the 17th minute.
A moment of carelessness almost cost Bolton dear in the 20th minute when
Emerson Thome lost possession.
Jermain Defoe scampered on to the loose ball but his finish was wasteful.
Bolton were playing some good football and Pedersen picked out Davies. He was
marginally off-target as he tried to chip Keller.
Tottenham retaliated and Simon Davies cut inside, only to find the wrong side
of the bar.
Nolan should have added a second goal but scuffed a shot into Keller's hands
from six yards.
Tottenham were looking ragged and lacking confidence after taking only one
point out of 15.
Defoe was suffering from a lack of service and even when he did get clear
found himelf shackled by Thome and Bruno N'Gotty.
Davies was working tirelessly up front for the home side and thumped in a shot
in the 38th minute that was scrambled away
Pleat made one change at half-time, bringing on Mauricio Taricco for the
ineffective Gus Poyet.
Bolton began the second half brightly with Okocha leaving Tarrico trailing in
his wake down the left.
The Nigerian playmaker fired in a shot from the edge of the area but it
cleared the bar.
Okocha then saw a free-kick come back off Michael Brown and rebound to Campo.
Bouyant after scoring the opener, he tried to place the ball beyond Keller
without success.
Okocha again tried his superb free-kick technique in the 53rd minute and saw
the goalkeeper tip his effort to safety.
Robbie Keane was drafted in by Tottenham after 60 minutes when he replaced
Jamie Redknapp.
Bolton poured forward a minute later and Spurs striker Frederic Kanoute
cleared his own bar following a corner from Djorkaeff.
Davies should have extended their lead in the 62nd minute when he dragged a
shot across the face of the goal at the back post.
But the Bolton supporters did not have long to wait with Pedersen scoring his
third goal in successive games after 64 minutes.
He out-foxed defender Anthony Gardner after being released by Djorkaeff before
finding the net from close range.
Campo then tried to release Pedersen in the 80th minute but the pass was
over-hit and Keller was able to gather safely.
Tottenham were running out of time but there was little fluency in their
play.
Bolton finished comfortable winners to secure their Premiership status with
four games to go after equalling last season's tally of 44 points.
