Tottenham's Christmas misery continued at White Hart Lane as they dominated the London derby against Charlton but still plunged to their fifth successive defeat.

Relegation-threatened Spurs created enough chances to win the match several times over - but were denied by a combination of off-target finishing and Dean Kiely's brilliance between the Charlton posts.

The high-flying Addicks escaped unpunished as David Pleat's team bossed the first hour - then delivered the perfect sucker-punch in the 69th minute.

Carlton Cole met Paolo di Canio's corner with a crashing header which Tottenham debutant Stephen Kelly could only head against the underside of his crossbar and into the net.

That goal, Cole's first for the club he is on loan at from Chelsea, completed a truly miserable festive period for the white half of north London.

Since thumping Wolves 5-2 on December 6, Spurs have lost five times: 4-0 against Newcastle, on penalties at Middlesbrough in the Carling Cup, 2-1 against Manchester United, 2-0 at Portsmouth and 1-0 today.

Their latest defeat came despite the sparkling home debut of John Jackson, the left-midfielder recalled from loan at Coventry.

But while the 21-year-old's performance was the one bright spark among further festive gloom for Pleat's side, Alan Curbishley's men delivered their second capital success in three days, following the 4-2 home victory against Chelsea on Boxing Day.

The Addicks line-up included former Tottenham man Chris Perry and Paul Konchesky, recalled from his three-month loan at Spurs on Tuesday due to his parent club's injury crisis.

Spurs made a promising start with Jackson especially influential.

The left-sided midfielder delivered the cross which Freddie Kanoute headed over, fired another ball into the danger zone which Mark Fish blocked as Gus Poyet closed in and also smacked an angled volley wide.

Dean Kiely saved the visitors after 13 minutes, brilliantly blocking Robbie Keane's effort when Kanoute's flick played the Irishman in on goal.

This game exploded into life in the 23rd minute.

First, di Canio's superb vision enabled him to play Jonatan Johansson in on goal - but Kasey Keller saved the Finn's first strike and his follow-up bounced inches wide with the keeper stranded.

Moments later at the other end, Keane cut inside after a Charlton clearance was closed down and Kiely dived to his right to save.

And barely another minute had passed when Kanoute met Rohan Ricketts' cross with a great header matched by a stunning tip-over by Kiely.

It was all action and Kanoute's shot-on-the-turn brushed the Addicks crossbar.

Spurs were bossing this contest and Scott Parker had to chest off his own line when Poyet headed Jackson's corner goalwards.

The chances kept coming for Spurs and Poyet slammed a spectacular overhead kick just over the top from another Ricketts cross nine minutes before the break.

Ricketts himself scuffed a shot wide on the stroke of half-time.

Openings came at both ends in the first minute after the break.

Jackson almost danced straight through the Charlton defence, before Euell burst into the Spurs goalmouth and saw his shot blocked.

The visitors half cleared a Tottenham free-kick and were relieved when Mauricio Taricco sliced wide from the edge of the box.

Keane turned and shot on the hour but his effort bounced harmlessly into Kiely's arms.

Spurs, although not dominating as much as they did in the first half, were still in control.

However, Charlton stormed into the lead in the 69th minute, completely against the run of play.

Cole met di Canio's corner from the right with a powerful header and Kelly, on his own goal-line, was unable to keep the ball out - heading against his the underside of the bar and into his net.

Charlton could have scored twice in the 75th minute.

Keller superbly palmed over Parker's 22-yard curler - and, from the resulting corner, Cole met Parker's cross and sent the ball fizzing across the face of goal.

Keller denied the Addicks late on with a smart save from Cole's thumping drive.
