Picture Rooney celebrates opening the scoring for Man Utd.

UNITED HIT FIVE BUT GUNNERS TOP TABLE

Manchester United bounced back in emphatic style following their shock midweek defeat by Burnley with a 5-0 hammering of Wigan.

Two goals from England striker Wayne Rooney and strikes from Bulgarian Dimitar Berbatov, Michael Owen, his first for the club, and Nani saw the Red Devils home in ultimately comfortable fashion.

United had struggled to break down the home side in the opening half but Rooney put United ahead in the 56th minute with his 100th goal for the club.

Berbatov added a second in the 58th minute before Rooney scored his second in the 65th minute. Owen hit his first for the club and Nani then scored a fifth in the final minute to complete the rout and move United third in the table.

They face Arsenal next Saturday - and two goals from Abou Diaby plus second-half strikes from William Gallas and Aaron Ramsey put the Gunners top of the table with a 4-1 win over Portsmouth.

Pompey are now bottom of the table and had no answer to free-scoring Arsenal.

Diaby put the Gunners ahead in the 17th minute after good work by Eduardo and added a second four minutes later.

Younes Kaboul pegged Arsenal back before the interval but Gallas and Ramsey made the points safe for Arsene Wenger's side with goals in the 51st and 68th minutes respectively.

Manchester City also maintained their 100% record with a 1-0 win over Wolves at Eastlands. Former Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor earned all three points for City with a 17th-minute strike.

Struggling Hull managed to earn their fist win of the season and moved out of the bottom three when new signing Kamel Ghilas pounced in the 61st minute to give them a 1-0 success over Bolton - their first home win since last December.

Stoke earned a point with a 0-0 draw at Birmingham, who are now seventh, but lost striker James Beattie through injury early on.

Two goals from Kenwyne Jones helped Sunderland fight back to beat Blackburn 2-1 at the Stadium of Light.

Rovers went in front in the 20th minute after a sustained spell of pressure when Gael Givet found the net with a crisp drive from outside the penalty area.

But Kenwyne Jones levelled in the 31st minute with his first goal of the season and then completed a fine afternoon for Steve Bruce's side by notching the winner in the 54th minute.
