Egyptian striker Mido became the new White Hart Lane hero with a stunning
two-goal salvo that earned Tottenham their first Premiership victory since New
Year's Day.
Mido struck gold in the 33rd and 56th minutes after Diomansy Kamara had put
the visitors ahead against the run of play in the 27th minute.
Mido, on loan from Roma for 18 months, went off to a standing ovation just
after the hour mark after a stunning full debut for his new club. His
replacement, Robbie Keane, then completed the scoring eight minutes from time
with a delightful chip over Kostas Chalkias in the Portsmouth goal.
Mido took just three minutes to show his potential with a rising drive from 20
yards after good work involving Timothee Atouba and Simon Davies. Tottenham's
bright start continued in the fifth minute when full-back Stephen Kelly forced
Chalkias into action with a header from six yards.
But it was new boy Mido who began to cause the visiting defence all kinds of
problems with his strength and pace in attack.
Dejan Stefanovic had to be quick to cut out a dangerous cross from the
Egyptian striker as the Londoners pressed for an opening goal.
Tottenham's other debutant, Andy Reid, was far less effective on the left-wing
with little or no support from the largely anonymous Atouba behind him.
Portsmouth were restricted to the occasional counter-attack but found that
Ledley King and Noreddine Naybet in no mood to let Aiyegbeni Yakubu have any
freedom.
Yet for all Tottenham's possession they lacked the creative spark to test the
Portsmouth rearguard and much of their fine approach work was undone by a poor
final ball.
With space at a premium in the middle of the park, Michael Carrick was unable
to flourish and Tottenham's frustration was beginning to increase.
That frustration was heightened in the 27th minute when Portsmouth took the
lead against the run of play. Kamara stunned the home fans when he sent a deft
glancing header into the roof of the net from Patrik Berger's inswinging corner.
But Spurs were level two minutes later and it was than man Mido who supplied the
finishing touch with some style.
A superb cross from the right-wing by Davies caused panic in the Pompey
defence and while they hesitated, Mido stole in to plant a firm header beyond
Chalkias.
Portsmouth thought they had gone back in front three minutes before the
interval but Diomansy's goal was ruled out for a clear handball against the
Pompey player. But his disallowed effort inspired his team-mates to enjoy their
best spell of pressure as the interval approached.
Mido was again at the heart of all Tottenham's best moves as the second half
began and in the 55th minute, he brought a further save from Chalkias in the
Pompey goal with a swift shot on the turn from 20 yards.
But a minute later his touch was perfect as he put Spurs in front for the
first time in the game. He capitalised on excellent work by Jermain Defoe to
fire into the roof of the net from point-blank range to the delight of the home
fans.
Portsmouth still had plenty to offer though and Aliou Cisse warned Spurs that
they remained a potent threat when he despatched a 20-yard shot that flew inches
over the crossbar.
In the 61st minute Mido's dreams of a hat-trick were dashed when he was
substituted to a standing ovation. Keane replaced the new Spurs star who
appeared to be limping as he headed down the tunnel.
Spurs were leaving themselves exposed at the back while they pursued a
decisive third goal and Pompey were determined to exploit the gaps.
In the 66th minute, Yakubu forced Paul Robinson into a fine save at the foot
of his right-hand post and the Spurs keeper had to be quick to deny Kamara as he
burst clear of the home defence three minutes later.
But Mido's replacement, Keane, finished off Portsmouth and secured all three
points for revitalised Spurs.
He supplied a the perfect finish to a wonderful pass from Reid by chipping the
ball beyond the advancing Chalkias for the third.
