Aiyegbeni Yakubu cracked four goals and substitute Teddy Sheringham the other in a fond farewell to Fratton Park as dismal Middlesbrough were taken apart in the season finale.
Suddenly the row between chairman Milan Mandaric and manager Harry Redknapp seemed just a dream as Pompey racked up a runaway win.
Unsurprisingly, Pompey's management team were given the rousing "Harry and Jim" welcome when the teams came out for action. There seemed no doubt whose side the fans were on - until 10 minutes later they began chanting "There's only one Milan".
But their enthusiasm was rewarded with Yakubu's eighth goal in the last 10 games after just four minutes.
Eyal Berkovic played a superb ball inside full-back Danny Mills and it was all the invitation Yakubu needed to confidently glide his shot past Mark Schwarzer and just inside a post for his 16th goal of the season.
Boro were almost gifted an equaliser, though, when Gaizka Mendieta floated the ball in from the right towards Stewart Downing but much nearer Pasanen and keeper Shaka Hislop - who both went for it. Somehow they cleared the 12th minute danger despite colliding.
But four minutes later, Boro shot themselves in the foot - or at least, Mills did, - by handing Yakubu a second Pompey goal from the penalty spot.
Nigel Quashie won the ball in his own half, smartly found Matt Taylor on the left and although Mills was favourite to collect the full-back's forward pass into the area, he allowed Yakubu to barge him off the ball - and responded with a clearly illegal challenge.
The Nigerian picked himself up to ram the penalty past Schwarzer who dived away from the direction of the shot.
With Franck Queudrue switching to centre-half Boro had winger Bolo Zenden playing left-back, where he sometimes plays for Holland, but it looked typical of a talented team playing too negatively away from home.
George Boateng was still rigidly guarding the back four even at 2-0 down after 16 minutes while Ugo Ehiogu had to head out a Berkovic cross from under the crossbar and Quashie's rocket shot from 25 yards went just over.
When Zenden moved forward to take a free-kick in the 27th minute it flew miles too high but two minutes later he grabbed a goal back for Boro.
Joseph Desire-Job neatly laid the ball off for the Dutchman to drill home in good style.
LuaLua was offside when he slotted in a low cross by Taylor just past the half hour.
But after sweeping another Berkovic pass over the bar when the Israeli clearly wanted a return ball, Yakubu completed a hat-trick in 32 minutes when he restored Portsmouth's two-goal cushion - thanks to an error by Ehiogu.
The former England man made a mess of what should have been a simple clearance from Taylor's low cross, knocking the ball against Yakubu who controlled it, saw off a challenge and left Schwarzer helpless from close-range.
Zenden was now playing permanently up front, having swapped positions with Downing, and supplied a cross which Job drove home - only to find an offside flag raised.
Queudrue was up with the Boro attack for a Downing corner but was clearly surprised when the ball came through a crowd of players in the six-yard box and struck him on the knee before flying over the bar.
Job missed another good chance in first-half stoppage time when Jon Greening's run on the right ended with a fast, low cross which the off-balance striker stabbed wide. Job was out of luck again when Arjan de Zeeuw blocked his
close-range effort.
John Curtis replaced Pasanen in the centre of the Pompey defence at the start of the second half.
Job shot over from a Mendieta pass before de Zeeuw could challenge in the 48th minute but Boateng had to look sharp to tackle Taylor close to Boro's goal a minute later after Yakubu fed the ball in.
Then Schwarzer reacted well to keep out LuaLua's powerful drive. Pompey were keeping the entertainment going right to the end.
Szilard Nemeth scuffed his volley wide when Zenden's run led to an opening for the Slovakian striker.
Portsmouth were seemingly content to let Boro run themselves into the ground in the second half on a hot afternoon.
The visitors brought on James Morrison for his Premiership debut and Michael Ricketts for his latest comeback.
Still, though, it was Zenden, Greening and Mendieta trying hardest to galvanise the Teessiders into productive action.
But sometimes their efforts were almost laughable. Queudrue's shot from a 30-yard free kick must have been one of the highest this season as it sailed into the top of tier of the stand.
Pompey decided to get Sheringham involved after 66 minutes and the crowd gave him a mighty cheer as he came on for LuaLua.
The England man then produced a fairytale finale to his career on the south coast as he and Yakubu netted late strikes to wrap up victory.
