PORTSMOUTH REPORTS 2000-2001

Huddersfield 4 Portsmouth 1

Midfielder Dean Gorre undid Portsmouth with three moments of second-half inspiration

The former Ajax star's lofted ball on the edge of the area was flicked on by Jon Dyson into the path of local folk hero Andy Booth to level the scores on 56 minutes after Portsmouth had taken a first half lead.

Thirteen minutes later Dutchman Gorre fired a superb long pass down the right which sent substitute Delroy Facey clear and the powerfully-built teenager charged goalward and cracked a rising drive into the top left-hand corner of the net.

And Gorre stepped up in injury time to calmly stroke a penalty past substitute keeper Chris Tardif after Jason Crowe hacked on-loan Derby striker Lee Morris down from behind.

Huddersfield capped a stirring second-half performance deep in injury time when winger Simon Baldry played a one-two with Facey before smashing the ball into the far corner of Tardif's net with the outside of his right boot.

Portsmouth's record £1.2million signing Lee Mills put the visitors ahead on 33 minutes with a 25-yard piledriver which crowned a fine move.

Kevin Harper back-heeled a Gary Brady pass into the path of Australian midfielder Mike Panapoulous. His first-time lay off was collected by Mills, who took a couple of touches to compose himself before rifling his shot into the top right-hand corner.

The former Bradford hitman moments earlier fluffed an easier chance when he was put clear by former Bantams colleague Lee Sharpe. Mills stabbed a first-time shot which was saved by home keeper Nico Vaesen with his legs.

Huddersfield's best first-half chance came on 13 minutes when winger Ben Thornley skipped away down the left to swing over a cross which was flicked on by Morris. Centre-half Jon Dyson beat opposite number Carl Tiler at the far post but his header was saved on the line by Aaron Flahavan.

Portsmouth created little in the second half and were constantly put on the back foot by Town's strong fightback.

Huddersfield's margin of victory could have been greater when Facey turned and shot wide through a crowded six-yard box on 70 minutes following Craig Armstrong's whipped-in corner.
