A deflected own goal in injury-time saw Manchester United move into the Champions League knock-out stages after a 3-3 draw with CSKA Moscow.

With only a point needed to seal a top two berth in Group B, last year's runners-up came from 3-1 down to deny the Russians a famous win at Old Trafford.

Fine strikes from Alan Dzagoev and Milos Krasic within six first-half minutes sandwiched Michael Owen's equaliser, and with Wayne Rooney watching on from the United bench, Igor Berezutski nooded home a third for CSKA early in the second half.

Paul Scholes' header got United back in the game with six minutes remaining but it was not until Valencia's deflected shot from distance crept past Igor Akinfeev in injury-time that United's progression was secured.

The Russians showed no intent to sit back at Old Trafford, and after Owen had fluffed two early chances, they stunned Old Trafford by taking the lead in the 25th minute.

Neat interplay lead to Dzagoev attacking the left-side of United's box, but despite Jonny Evans appearing to have matters under control, the Russian teenager found the space to lash a superb finish from an acute past a static Edwin van der Sar.

After earlier wasting a brace of opportunities, Owen did find the net to drag United level in the 29th minute, showing his predatory instincts of old to spin on a loose ball in the box before dispatching a low shot into Igor Akinfeev's bottom corner.

CSKA refused to lay down however, and another neat move saw them re-establish their lead only two minutes later.

Krasic timed his run to perfection to get in behind the sloppy United defence, and despite being held up by Van der Sar, the midfielder dispatched a shot on the turn into the unguarded net.

Despite Sir Alex Ferguson's half-time plea for improved defending, United fell further behind two minutes after the break. A deep free-kick fro the left saw Berezutsky escape the attentions of the hosts backline to nod past an exposed Van der Sar at the far post.

United were denied an immediate avenue back into the game when Darren Fletcher was refused a penalty, despite being clearly fouled in the box. The returning midfielder was instead given a yellow card for diving, and by now having seen enough, Ferguson introduced Rooney from the bench for the consistently ineffective Nani.

United's talisman was quickly in the thick of the action, and glanced his header wide of the far post from Gary Neville's cross just after the hour mark.

Federico Macheda saw his header cannon off the post as United sought a way back into the game, one they eventually found with six minutes remaining when Paul Scholes nodded home Neville's free-kick from the right.

CSKA looked set to hold on for a precious win until the superb Akinfeev was fooled by Valencia's deflected drive from 25 yards as it all fell apart for the Russians, who saw Deividas Semberas sent-off deep into added time for two bookable offences.
