Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp is set to turn down the chance of adding the firepower of Nigerian striker Chinedu Ogbuke to his team of UEFA Cup qualification hopefuls.
Tuesday night's goalless draw at home to Middlesbrough means Pompey have still not won a Premiership match this year, scoring just four goals in the last five league games and suffering shut-outs in the last two at home.
Ogbuke, who has scored eight goals in 13 matches for Norwegian side Lyn Oslo, is only 20 and has been training with Pompey for a week after the collapse of a presupposed £2.7million move to Spartak Moscow last month.
But Portsmouth need a work permit for him to play in England and although boss Redknapp rates him as a major prospect, he admitted: "We would probably have to go to appeal to get the permit and it could take weeks because he only has a few caps.
"I would be interested in taking him in the future unless (Lyn) ask for silly money because he is sharp, quick and has a very good strike rate in Norway.
"But it is getting late now and although we have had a good look around, I don't think we will do anything more in the transfer window."
Redknapp has already signed the versatile Lauren for £500,000 from Arsenal, left-back Djimi Traore from Charlton for £1million and young French midfielder Arnold Mvuemba on loan from Rennes this month.
And with five senior strikers already on the books at Fratton Park, that department should not be a problem.
But Redknapp seems unable to decide on his best front line pairing and the failure of a new partnership between 11-goal Kanu and Benjani Mwaruwari against Boro - both were substituted in the second half - could lead to injury-prone Lomana LuaLua being given only his fifth Premiership start of the season at Wigan on Saturday.
LuaLua, who has been out for eight weeks with a thigh injury and has a troubled life off the field, was sent on from the substitutes' bench for the last 16 minutes and looked sharp.
Redknapp said: "He could be vital for us in the last 13 games. He can do special stuff and change a game for you but his season has never really got going, although it is not his fault he has been injured."
Congolese star LuaLua said: "I'm just happy to be playing again.
"I got through those last few minutes without a problem and just have to wait and see tomorrow how I feel but so far so good."
