Xabi Alonso has warned Chelsea that Liverpool are coming to get them in the Premiership next season.

The Reds wrecked Jose Mourinho's dream of the double in Saturday's FA Cup semi-final and now they want to make the step to join Chelsea in serious contention for the league crown.

Alonso said: "We are getting there. We are improving and hopefully next season we can be challenging for the title. This result will inspire confidence.

"We were confident before the game. This season we have been winning a lot of games but against the top teams we have struggled a little bit.

"That's why in the semi-final against Chelsea we wanted to show the level we are at and I think we did that.

"We have shown that we have improved from last season when we won the Champions League but we want to carry on. We don't want to stop. We want to challenge for the title. That's our target."

The Spain midfielder admitted the 2-1 victory over the Londoners at Old Trafford at the weekend was made extra-special because of the rivalry which has built up between the clubs in the last two seasons.

Alonso said: "In the last two seasons we have had special and exciting games against Chelsea and because of that is special for the players and fans to beat them at the end of the season.

"We have shown we are better than Chelsea in the key games - last season in the Champions League semi-final and this season in the FA Cup semi-final - we have been better than them overall.

"We have shown we can win playing good football and that's why we have to be happy but we have to think about the final (against West Ham) because nothing is won yet.

"It's going to be tough in the final. We will be favourites because we are in the best position in the league.

"Last season we were in the Champions League final but we just have to be confident."
