MANCHESTER UNITED REPORTS 1997-1998

Man Utd 1 Barnsley 1

By David Anderson, PA Sport

Barnsley gained some revenge for their drubbing on their last visit to Manchester United when they earned an FA Cup fifth round replay.

John Hendrie capitalised on a Peter Schmeichel blunder to give the Tykes the lead after 37 minutes at Old Trafford, where they lost 7-0 in October, before Teddy Sheringham equalised four minutes later.

Barnsley had to withstand a battering from United in the dying minutes, but their defence stood firm to book a replay at Oakwell on Wednesday week to see who will go through to a quarter-final meeting with Newcastle at St James' Park.

The replay means that the Munich testimonial match, which was due to take place the previous night, will now have to be postponed.

Injuries and suspensions had already forced United boss Alex Ferguson into making changes, but he also handed Norwegian striker Erik Nevland his full debut and defender Michael Clegg his first start of the season.

Barnsley sensed they had a chance and they began brightly as they were determined to restore their badly-bruised pride.

On seven minutes Schmeichel had to rush out of his box to head clear from Hendrie, who had beaten United's offside trap.

Ronny Johnsen created United's first real chance when he played a one-two with Brian McClair before back heeling the ball to Nevland, who was tackled for a corner.

The league leaders, as in previous weeks, were not firing on all cylinders against the Premiership's bottom club and both sides struggled to create an opening.

McClair was just millimetres away from breaking the deadlock after 26 minutes when he hit a left-footed shot against the inside of the post from Ryan Giggs' header.

United were now gaining the upper hand and David Watson produced a terrific save from the impressive Johnsen following a great back heel from Giggs.

Then on 37 minutes came the normally-reliable Schmeichel's clanger. There appeared to be little danger as Schmeichel came out to clear Gary Pallister's back pass, but the Dane sliced his kick and Hendrie pounced on the spinning ball to slot home only his second goal of the season.

Back came United and Watson rushed out to clear from the on-rushing Giggs following Jovo Bosancic's suicidal back pass.

Then on 41 minutes Sheringham pounced on Giggs' back heel from six yards out to haul United level with his 12th goal of the season.

The tie had finally come to life and Schmeichel denied Ward with a great block.

United replaced Johnsen with David Beckham at half-time in an attempt to give them more width down the right, where Phil Neville had been operating as a makeshift midfielder in the first half.

Giggs should have scored with a free header inside the first minute after the restart, but instead he planted the ball straight into Watson's arms.

United sliced through Barnsley's defence when Pallister found Giggs, who back heeled the ball into the path of the central defender only for Chris Morgan to hack his centre away for a corner.

Cruyff came on for Nevland on 57 minutes, for his first taste of first-team action since United thrashed Barnsley in October, and straight away he forced Adrian Moses into conceding a corner.

Hendrie tried to take on the whole United side during a mazy run on 61 minutes and he went past Pallister before he fired wide under pressure from Sheringham.

At the other end, Watson stuck out his hand to pluck the ball from Beckham as he tried to go past him, while Clegg headed just wide from Beckham's cross.

Hendrie should have restored Barnsley's lead on 77 minutes when he missed the target after Martin Bullock had set him up.

In a frantic finale, substitute Andy Liddell appealed in vain for a penalty following a challenge from substitute Gary Neville and Moses denied Giggs with a superb tackle.

Watson then made a great double save as first he thwarted Giggs and then Cruyff from the rebound.
