Paul Scholes admits Manchester United have yet to hit top gear this season and must start to raise their game.

The midfielder may be being slightly harsh on Sir Alex Ferguson's men, who remain more than competitive on all fronts this term.

They currently sit second in the Premier League table, just two points off the pace, have made a 100 per cent start to their UEFA Champions League campaign ahead of Tuesday night's clash with CSKA Moscow, and have eased into the last eight of the Carling Cup.

However, Old Trafford is not a place to become complacent and experienced midfield star Scholes knows better than most that there is always room for improvement.

"I wouldn't say we've been stuttering, but we haven't been as fluent as we know we can be," the 34-year-old said in the Daily Mirror.

"There's been the odd performance - like Tottenham away (a 3-1 win) - where everything's come together, but I think the best is ahead of us.

"We're not too worried about our form as traditionally we're not great at the start of the season.

"The difference this time is that, more often than not, we've still been winning games. So I can't complain too much. But we would like to get back to the top of the Premier League - with style.

"Some teams might settle for getting results, but at United we aim a little higher."

Scholes also insists he has no plans of slowing down on a personal level, believing he is still capable of playing a key role for United.

He added: "I don't get forward or score anywhere near as many goals as I used to. I just try to do what I can in other areas. But I feel fine.

"I enjoy training and I don't feel any problems or niggles afterwards. It's strange that people think once you get past 30 you're finished.

"But I feel good. I don't think of myself as an old man. The challenge is to try to make sure your performances don't slip."
