MANCHESTER CITY REPORTS 1997-1998

Tranmere 0 Man City 0

Tranmere entered the record books as they played out a fifth successive goalless draw in the league against Manchester City at Prenton Park.

It was their seventh game in succession without conceding a goal but they remain third from bottom just behind City.

The better chances fell to the visitors but a post and two fine saves by home keeper Steve Simonsen denied them

Uwe Rosler hit the woodwork after only seven minutes as City seized the early initiative.

And Simonsen made a one handed save to deny Georgi Kinkladze as City continued to dominate the first half.

Simonsen pulled off an even better save in the 59th minute when he leapt to tip over a Lee Bradbury header.

Rovers never really tested City keeper Tommy Wright throughout the 90 minutes.

Gary Jones, Micky Mellon and new signing Steve Frail all missed the target from good openings.

Before the break Simonsen had to race off his line to deny Rosler when the German striker chased Wright's long clearance.

Kit Symons headed over from City's next attack and when Tranmere rallied Andy Parkinson saw an angled shot saved by Wright.

On the stroke of halftime Symons got in a vital clearance for City from a dangerous cross from Parkinson.

Kinkladze was outstanding in midfield for City and there was also good work from defenders Murtaz Shelia and Richard Edghill.

Liam O'Brien was outstanding for Rovers and there was also sound contributions from Mellon and John McGreal.
