Liverpool could be without both Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard for Wednesday's crucial Champions League trip to Lyon.

The Reds were beaten 3-1 at Fulham on Saturday, a game which Gerrard missed with a groin injury and one which saw Torres replaced in the second half.

Afterwards boss Rafael Benitez said he would "have to see how Gerrard progresses" with his troublesome groin, while he admitted Torres was still not fully fit.

Benitez said: "We decided to play Fernando Torres against Manchester United (last Sunday) and it was a difficult decision because he was not 100 per cent fit. He needed four days to be ready and is still not 100 per cent fit.

"We decided to put him on the pitch but we had to protect him and that's why we took him out after 60 minutes. I don't want to lose an important player like Fernando for one month."

The Spaniard has already described the trip to France as a "must-win" game with his side having taken just three points from the opening three games in their group, which also features Fiorentina.

He had earlier said: "I do not know yet whether Steven will play in Lyon, we must work with him. But it is true there is a problem.

"We do have a problem if he is not fit for Lyon, it is a crucial time.

"He is doing well, and maybe he could be available. But Glen Johnson will be out for five days with a calf tear, so he is a problem too."

Johnson also missed Saturday's defeat at Fulham - one which leaves the Reds nine points behind leaders Chelsea.
