Leicester City are three points away from promotion to the Barclaycard Premiership after victory over Nottingham Forest at the Walkers Stadium.

A win against Rotherham United at Millmoor on Saturday would make Micky Adams' Foxes mathematical certainties for an automatic return to the top flight.

Leicester's triumph in the east midlands derby clash came courtesy of Tommy Wright who was making his full debut at 18 years old, the lifelong City fan and former Foxes mascot pouncing on a loose ball in the penalty box to tap home the only goal of the game.

City had made most of the early running in a full-blooded encounter, a penalty appeal being waved away in the seventh minute when Alan Rogers went down in the Forest area under pressure from Mathieu Louis-Jean, referee Mark Clattenburg in the ideal position to view the incident.

Trevor Benjamin, who had bounced back from a thigh strain, chanced his arm from range in the 18th minute but his drive flew over the crossbar and, moments later, Matt Elliott's header from a Muzzy Izzet corner looped harmlessly into the arms of Forest keeper Darren Ward.

At the other end, striker David Johnson saw his snap-shot blocked by Leicester skipper Elliott before the deadlock was broken in the 37th minute by Wright.

Team-mate Jordan Stewart's low shot sparked confusion in a crowded Forest penalty area.

And with Ward able only to parry, Wright arrived on cue to slot in from point-blank range.

The visitors threatened a comeback with 55 minutes gone but the offside flag had already been raised before City keeper Ian Walker diverted Marlon Harewood's effort wide.

And the City keeper was in action again less than five minutes later as Darren Huckerby's shot was saved low to the right before Ward was called on to tip Stewart's booming drive over the crossbar.

Walker proved steadfast again in the 67th minute when he saved Harewood's opportunist effort in front of his face.
