Paul Dickov and Trevor Benjamin kept Leicester's promotion bandwagon on track with the goals that finally sank a stubborn Burnley outfit.

Scotland international Dickov struck his 20th goal of the season 11 minutes from time after Burnley striker Robbie Blake had fashioned - and missed - a stack of chances for the hosts.

And Benjamin killed off the Clarets to render Frank Sinclair's late own-goal academic and keep the gap between City and third-placed Sheffield United to 10 points.

Burnley boss Stan Ternent made six changes to the side he labelled "bone idle" after the weekend defeat by Walsall - their third successive reverse - and the Clarets more than held their own on a heavy Turf Moor pitch until Dickov's intervention.

Leicester suffered a worrying injury blow when Brian Deane, their two-goal hero against Preston at the weekend, hobbled off clutching his hamstring.

Burnley's best chances of the opening half fell to the lively Blake, but he fired the first wide with Ian Walker beaten, and the second high over the crossbar.

Leicester finished the first period the strongest, with Dickov shooting narrowly wide and Gerry Taggart seeing a headed goal from Jordan Stewart's cross ruled out for a foul.

Blake was seemingly intent on taking on Leicester himself, and he planted a free-kick on to the roof of Walker's net before sending two more good chances over.

But it was Leicester who finally made the breakthrough. Muzzy Izzet's corner cannoned off Matt Elliott and rolled across the goal for Dickov score from two yards, and four minutes later Benjamin got in front of Marlon Beresford from another Izzet corner to flick home the second.

Burnley grabbed a late consolation when Sinclair turned in Glen Little's cross.
