Andy Todd scored his first goal for Charlton and Shaun Bartlett added a sweet
second to send Leicester crashing to their eighth successive away defeat in the
Premiership.
Todd - making his 37th appearance for the Addicks since joining from Bolton -
pounced after 32 minutes to head home a loose ball from just a yard out.
It was a game the home side dominated, but they did not make sure of the
points until nine minutes from the end, when Bartlett brought the crowd to their
feet by meeting Graham Stuart's chip with a fine finish.
The victory means Charlton climb above Leicester into eighth spot, just five
points off a Champions League place, while the Foxes are still looking for their
first away point since mid-November.
Charlton dominated from the first whistle and Bartlett, their South African
international striker, might have done better from a good chance in the opening
minute.
Claus Jensen robbed Andy Impey on the halfway line and then fed Bartlett on
the left edge of the box. But, instead of shooting, he tried to return the pass
and Matt Elliott made the interception.
Danish international Jensen was having a big influence on the game. After six
minutes he sent in a shot from 20 yards, but it lacked the pace to trouble Simon
Royce in the Leicester goal.
However, after 10 minutes, Jensen did beat former Charlton goalkeeper Royce
with a dipping drive from 20 yards, but this time the ball crashed off the bar,
before bouncing behind for a goal kick.
Leicester finally made an impression after 17 minutes, from Impey's inswinging
corner on the right.
Elliott won the downward header, but Trevor Benjamin made a mess of his
attempted shot and Charlton cleared the danger.
The game ground to an unnecessary halt after 25 minutes when Leicester won a
free-kick on the edge of the Charlton box, following a foul by Scott Parker on
Darren Eadie.
There was some argy-bargy in the wall and referee Jeff Winter lectured Dean
Sturridge and Charlton defender Todd. He then booked Todd for some more
pushing.
The free-kick was hardly worth waiting for, however, as Gary Rowett drove it
straight into the wall, and Charlton cleared easily.
That man Jensen was at the heart of the action again after half an hour, with
a teasing cross from the left, which saw Royce come off his line to punch
clear.
A minute later, England new boy Chris Powell sent in a fierce shot from the
edge of the Leicester box, and Royce did well to claw it behind for a corner,
from which Charlton took the lead.
Jensen's right wing cross saw Bartlett send a powerful header crashing against
the Leicester bar. And it was Todd who reacted fastest to pounce on the loose
ball and nod it over the line.
From the re-start, Parker pushed over Eadie, and his theatrical dive was
enough to earn the Charlton midfielder the game's second booking. However, Eadie
must have been hurt in the fall, as he was replaced after 39 minutes by Stefan
Oakes.
That was a blow for Leicester, as Eadie had been their most threatening
player.
Impey became the first Leicester player to pick up a caution, as he halted a
Parker run with a tackle from behind after 43 minutes.
Leicester's potency was summed up in injury time when a free-kick was hoisted
into the Charlton box and Elliott sent in a looping header which was simple to
catch for Sasa Ilic.
There was goalmouth action at both ends inside the first four minutes of the
restart.
After 47 minutes, Benjamin received the ball on the right edge of the Charlton
box. He turned smartly inside and curled a left foot shot beyond the far post.
But Charlton went closer two minutes later. Powell played a low pass to
Bartlett on the right edge of the box and he sent a clever flick over the heads
of the Leicester defence for strike partner Jonatan Johansson.
The Finnish striker matched the fine pass with an equally good shot, but Royce
again did well to push the ball behind for a corner.
Sturridge was late with a challenge on Richard Rufus after 55 minutes and
received a yellow card which made it two each for the teams.
Both teams were employing a 3-5-2 formation, but Charlton's wing-backs were
proving to be far more effective than their Leicester counterparts, as the home
side continued to hold the upper hand.
Leicester boss Taylor felt it was time for a change, and on the hour he
replaced Sturridge with Arnar Gunnlaugsson.
Curbishley responded soon after with a double substitution as John Robinson
and Mark Kinsella come on for Radostin Kishishev and Parker.
There was a warm welcome from the home fans for skipper Kinsella, who has made
only one start since a cartilage operation in December.
Leicester then increased their firepower by introducing Ade Akinbiyi for
Callum Davidson after 71 minutes.
With 11 minutes remaining Jensen took a corner short to Stuart and his drive
was deflected behind by Benjamin for another corner. This time Kinsella sent in
a cross and Johansson headed straight at Royce.
But Charlton rounded off a convincing performance in style, when Bartlett
scored a lovely second goal after 81 minutes.
Stuart picked him out on the left hand side of the box with a chip over the
defence, and Bartlett buried the ball in the opposite corner.
