LEICESTER CITY REPORTS 2000-2001
Picture Impey clashes with Vinnicombe.

Leicester 1 Wycombe 2

By John Curtis, PA Sport

Roy Essandoh scored a dramatic injury-time winner to send Second Division Wycombe into the semi-finals of the FA Cup.

The Wanderers substitute headed home in the second minute of time added on to stun Peter Taylor's high-flying Premiership side.

It was no more than they deserved and at the final whistle Wycombe manager Lawrie Sanchez, who had been banished from the dug-out 11 minutes from time, went onto the pitch to salute the 3,000 Wycombe fans with his jubilant players.

Sanchez had been incensed when Foxes midfielder Stefan Oakes clearly handled a cross in the area from Steve Brown with just 11 minutes remaining.

It looked a clear-cut penalty but the linesman kept his flag down and referee Steve Bennett, who was also well placed, waved play on.

Sanchez stormed from the dug-out to confront the assistant and he was then told to leave the pitch by Bennett.

But his anger turned to joy when Essandoh struck in the dying seconds to take the Chairboys to within 90 minutes of a place in the final at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium.

Wycombe made it clear from the first minute that they had not come to Filbert Street just to make up the numbers and they hustled the Foxes out of their stride.

Steve Brown was their man of the match with an all-action display in the centre of the park and he was constantly involved in the thick of the action.

It was just a pity that he was red-carded after the deciding goal for a second bookable offence.

There were heroes everywhere for the side lying 16th in the Second Division but centre-backs Jason Cousins and Jamie Bates were particularly outstanding.

If Leicester had been anticipating an easy ride then they were quickly forced to think again by their Second Division opponents.

The home side were not allowed to settle by a side who had already disposed of Grimsby, Wolves and Wimbledon in the competition.

Brown was quickly making his presence felt and one good break forward ended with a 25-yard shot which flew wide.

There was no holding back by Sanchez's battlers and Jason Cousins was yellow-carded for a crude challenge on Dean Sturridge.

It was 20 minutes before Leicester seriously threatened with Martin Taylor saving a header from Robbie Savage away to his right following an inswinging cross from Andrew Impey.

The Foxes then enjoyed a little spell of pressure with former Wycombe player Steve Guppy having a shot blocked by Michael Simpson after Ade Akinbiyi had turned the ball back into his path.

Taylor held on to a rising effort from Muzzy Izzet but Wanderers were still a threat on the break and Simon Royce was forced to turn a low shot from Dannie Bulman around the post.

Brown and Savage were involved in a constant running battle and both of them were yellow-carded for fouls on each other in separate incidents.

The fighting spirit of Wycombe was highlighted by Cousins, who produced a splendid last-ditch tackle to deny Savage after he had been put clear by Gerry Taggart.

But Wycombe came closest to scoring in first-half injury-time when Royce finger-tipped away a vicious 25-yard volley from Brown, who held his head in disbelief.

Andrew Impey also had to produce a perfectly-timed tackle to halt George Clegg after he had broken clear.

Then came that dramatic start to the second half as McCarthy put Wycombe in front with his headed goal.

Fittingly it was the dangerous Brown who sent over the free-kick - and McCarthy stooped to send his header wide of Royce and into the bottom left-hand corner of the net.

The 3,000-plus Wycombe fans went wild with delight and their side had already made a positive start to the second half with Ryan sending a glancing header across the face of goal.

Leicester tried to retaliate and Taylor held onto an Akinbiyi header from a Oakes free-kick.

Royce had to finger-tip away a header from Brown which skidded off the wet surface.

But Wanderers started to tire after their Trojan efforts and after 67 minutes Leicester got back on level terms.

Taggart made good ground forward before finding substitute Darren Eadie in space on the left flank and his low cross was turned into the roof of the net by Izzet.

Izzet then presented Akinbiyi with a golden chance to put Leicester ahead when he sent him clear of the Wycombe defence - but Taylor came out to block.

It proved to be costly as with only 90 seconds left Essandoh sent the visitors into dreamland.
