IPSWICH TOWN REPORTS 1998-1999

Ipswich 3 Watford 2

A broken leg for Ipswich star Kieron Dyer overshadowed Town's 3-2 home win over Watford.

Dyer was carried off 10 minutes after scoring Ipswich's opening goal.

He crumpled in a heap in the 26th minute, already the victim of two crushing tackles earlier in the match - the second by Micah Hyde which had left him limping quite badly.

The 20-year-old was called into the full England squad to face France last month and has been instrumental in Ipswich's impressive season in which they are now second in the First Division.

Ipswich led 3-0 with goals from Dyer, Mark Venus and David Johnson, with eight minutes left when a double substitution heralded a brave Watford comeback.

Watford substitute Tommy Smith headed in a Hyde corner and three minutes later fellow substitute Tommy Mooney set up an exciting finish when he beat Richard Wright with a low 20-yard shot.

Ipswich were two up by the break, the first from Dyer who latched on to a Mark Venus through ball which was dummied by Richard Naylor.

Dyer turned on the edge of the area to beat Alec Chamberlain but the pain was etched on his face even at that point.

Venus got Town's second after a delayed free-kick, when Dyer was being taken off.

Jamie Clapham touched the ball at the edge of the area to Venus who drove the ball around the wall into Chamberlain's top right-hand corner.

Ipswich's third came in the 74th minute when Johnson ran on to Jim Magilton's through ball and rounded the keeper to slide the ball home despite Steve Palmer's effort to clear off the line.
