A first half hat-trick from Alex Mathie who was substituted at the interval,
and two second half goals from Dutchman Bobby Petta gave Ipswich an overwhelming
East Anglian derby victory over Norwich.
Ipswich, on a run that had seen them take 16 points from a possible 18, are
now closing the gap on the top six.
Norwich might have picked up a couple of goals themselves but finished
demoralised and well beaten.
There was a dramatic start with Ipswich taking the lead after 64 seconds.
Mathie collected a throw from Jamie Clapham and blasted a right foot shot that
beat Andy Marshall for speed.
Mathie's second goal, in the 22nd minute, came when he raced through a square
Norwich defence and beat Marshall just inside the keepers left hand post.
Mathie scored his third three minutes before the interval when Mick Stockwell
crossed low from the right and Mathie forced the ball past Marshall from close
range.
Ipswich could have had more. Striker David Johnson wasted two clear chances in
the 35 and 36th minute.
On the first occasion he saw his shot blocked by Marshall's outstretched arm
and then he blazed over the bar from close range.
In the 56th minute Ipswich, now without Mathie, made it four.
Jason Cundy and Johnson set Petta off on a dazzling run down the left. The
Dutchman cut between Daryl Sutch and Craig Fleming before beating Marshall with
a low shot.
Nine minutes from the end, Petta added a fifth for Ipswich after Danny Sonner
had knocked the ball forward and Matt Holland had shrugged off a challenge by
substitute Danny Mills.
Bobby Fleck missed a great chance for Norwich in the 72nd minute and Darren
Eadie was unlucky with a left foot shot after a thrilling solo run three minutes
later.
There were seven bookings but three of the Norwich ones were for dissent which
will not please manager Mike Walker.
