Leicester 3 Hull 2

By Ross Heppenstall, PA Sport

Joey Gudjonsson's sensational double sentenced Hull boss Peter Taylor to a nightmare return to his former employers as Leicester claimed victory at the Walkers Stadium.

The Icelandic midfielder scored an extraordinary goal from inside his own half after 64 minutes and then hit the winner six minutes from time.

Hull midfielder Stuart Green netted with 15 minutes remaining to tie the scores at 2-2 and looked to have secured the battling Tigers a precious point.

But Gudjonsson clearly had other ideas and he again took centre stage with another long-range effort to ensure Leicester leapfrogged Hull in the Coca-Cola Championship.

It ensured a miserable return for Taylor, whose reputation took a severe battering during his ill-fated 15-month spell as Foxes boss five years ago.

Taylor admitted he was prepared for a collective outpour of vitriol from Leicester fans but in truth the abuse from the stands was low-key and barely audible.

It was the Foxes who fashioned the first noteworthy goalscoring opportunity after nine minutes when the lively Iain Hume warmed Boaz Myhill's hands from 20 yards.

Leicester began to offer the greater threat in attack and they made the breakthrough after 30 minutes with a clinical strike from Hume.

The imperious Gudjonsson spotted Hume making a run behind the visiting defence and slipped a perfect slide-rule pass through to the Canada striker.

Hume kept his composure from 12 yards to sweep the ball past Myhill and into the far corner as the Tigers appealed in vain for an offside flag.

However, Taylor's men provided the perfect riposte five minutes later as the industrious Jon Parkin collected Green's pass and broke free down the right flank.

Parkin delivered a delightful cross to the far post and Stuart Elliott arrived to plant a firm header past Paul Henderson from six yards.

Elliott celebrated with a spectacular somersault but the visitors were left thanking their lucky stars moments later as Damien Delaney nodded against his own crossbar from Gudjonsson's teasing cross.

Leicester came close to regaining the lead 11 minutes after the restart when Matty Fryatt nodded the ball into Stephen Hughes' path on the edge of the box, only for the midfielder to volley wide.

Foxes skipper Alan Maybury then fired into Myhill's midriff from the edge of the box before Gudjonsson took centre stage in extraordinary fashion.

Having spotted Myhill off his line, Gudjonsson took aim from just inside his own half with a magnificent effort over the Hull keeper to restore the Foxes' advantage.

It revived memories of David Beckham's strike against Wimbledon at Selhurst Park during his early Manchester United days - and was certainly more powerful than Xabi Alonso's effort for Liverpool against Luton at Kenilworth Road in January.

Hull could have been level moments later as Henderson produced the save of the match to deny Parkin after the striker volleyed Ryan France's goalwards from just six yards.

However, with six minutes remaining Gudjonsson produced another superb strike to secure the points for Leicester.

Nils-Eric Johansson crossed from the left flank and Gudjonsson thrashed home a right-foot strike from the edge of the box to leave Leicester fans delighted.
